Default Catapults moves forward after each shot

    Hey guys,
Do you notice about the catapults move slightly forward after they throw a missile. The problem is AI controlled catapults drew closer and closer to my walls and when they were in range, my towers burn them down. AI don't know how to reset them after significant displacement. Their strange animation make this I think. I also doubt crossbowmen animation do the same, but not so sure about them though.

This is deliberate due to real life catapults going forward with each shot.

I do agree that it is a problem that the AI does not reposition them, bit I do not know if this can be fixed.

And no, Crossbowmen do not move forward.

Um no. According to Newton's 3rd Law it will move backwards

You forget that the force is not being directed directly but through a swinging "arm".

I'm no professor of physics or catapults, but could it be possible that most of the reaction force is directed downwards at the beginning of the shot, and that finally the impact of the arm against the wooden beam at the moment of launch could propel the catapult forward slightly?

How many shots will it take before the catapults are within tower range? Will they even have ammo left at that point?

They've never moved for me... I put them in a spot and they stay there.

They move a bit after each shot about 2 feets. It is more obvious when multiple catapults bring down multiple sections. That's enough to get them in range of towers.

Joining in with SirRobin - how many shots are we talking about? Rough estimate

Like he says they don't move. The difficult setting again? On M/M they don't move...

    This is just strange.
Of course, I only play on VH/VH...

Were you testing them against a continual target, such as a wall?

Rather strange. Maybe on VH the AI is only fighting downhill battles
We need some animation expert in here for a final consult.

Hmm, just played a custom battle and had all units target a different section of the wall. They did move forward with each sot. But seeing as how the ai hardly ever uses siege units I don't see it as a problem

I am going to have to disagree with Newt on that one, playing as England Early Era, the French have attacked Angers & Caen, both Fortresses and utilised 2 units of Catapults, plus two units of Ballista.

On the subject of Ballista the AI advances them to point blank range with the wall, never noticed this before with 6.1 oe 6.2, anybody have a similar situation

This is not a gun though, I am afraid.

A trebuchet swings and wants to slightly push the assembly backwards (Not that is happens with anny appreciable force).

A Catapult swings and Hits the interrupt beam abruptly, and transfers this force forward driving the catapult front slightly into the dirt, and slightly forward if some numbskull gave it wheels (And M2TW:K catapults have wheels).
I also have various real-life simulations supporting me

While I'm in the mood here is a video of... guns. Or better yet, cannons.

That amused me greatly, thank you.
Shooting ranges are significantly better with cannons, I think!

Wow, I realized the facts without any technical education I would surely have been declared chief siege engineer if I had been around 800 years ago !

You may now address me as "Master bombardist" if you please.
