AP unit seriously bugged in this mod ?
In v. 2.02 at least. They are too imbalance. After playing too many games, I think they not only halve the armor, but they cut the total defense by half too ! (bug ?)
To test, I use a custom battle : standard maceman vs standard swordman:
I changed their stats as below. Both have 75 unit
Maceman : Attack 1 (!!!) Def 14
Swordman : Attack 8 Def 15 (armor 3)
THe maceman always decimate the swordman, while only suffer 40% casualties
If the ap working right, the swordman still have 8 attack and 13 def, noway a 1 attack maceman can kill them so easy
Some of you might say, ok but the swordman can kill light unit faster . Wrong, after many test, an 1 attack maceman always kill faster than a 8 attack swordman and less casualties, always
So what the point of getting sword in this game btw

It has to do with animations, I think. I may make adjustments to their delay, to account for this, in the 3.0 system.

varangoi are the infantry gods of BC, they do as much damage with their one-handed axe as a twohander... plus they have the advantage of a faster attack and stronger defense with their shield

Re: AP unit seriously bugged in this mod ?
Their shield stat is irrelevant to whether they have their shield in their hand or not, IIRC. Its relevance is based on what side the unit is attacked on.

would a unit with the shield strapped to their back be more resilient when under attack from the rear?

No, sadly. You can't do that with the current stat system.
