    Default Income

Why do none of my cities have any expenses but my armies and stuff still cost money? I haven't played kingdoms before but i'm a seasoned Rome player and in Rome it takes away money from your cities on the details page. I'm trying to get a campaign as the crusader states started but I keep going broke. In extended realism I can manage to get Rome out of their -10k a turn debt just fine, something is just eluding me here or something.

Armies are calculated separately from cities in Medieval 2.
Going broke as the CS is pretty normal. Capture a few cities and/or disband some units.

And are the pilgrims needed for something or are they just a waste of gold?

They work well as cannon fodder, and are very cheap.
Other than that, there's no need to hold onto them.
I recommend you thin your army by taking a settlement or two. That'll decrease your expenses, and increase your income.

Army expenses are not assigned to the cities like they are in Rome.

Except for that, but the general Idea behind making money is the same. No units in heartland cities, trade routes and buildings, etc. Also towers on walls seem to behave differently, they aren't all manned or something when I forget about my cavalry that I sent outside only to get slaughter by cavalry archers my towers seem to be doing nothing.

Also, I have trouble with cavalry dominating spearmen squads. Granted i'm playing on VH/VH but it annoys the hell out of me when a unit of cavalry beats a unit of spearmen.

Its not Rome... most cavalry will beat spearmen- especially basic militia spears or other non professional units. Veteran Urban militia can stand up to light cavalry and inflict some losses on heavy cavalry but will lose more than 50% in the charge and often break and rout if your general is too far away or low command.

Later era spears and pikes can fight on more equal terms with cavalry and decimate most light cavalries but even the best pikes usually lose to the best heavy cavalry unless you also mix in some AP halberds or axemen or something.

That most likely was Tears of Destiny "Instead of complaining that the game is too hard on VH or H, try a lower difficulty. Be more pro, and suck less. "

So, now we're going off-topic because of it? I'll be the first one to get back.

This isn't Rome. Low taxes policies will bring in great wealth in time, as they boost population growth (tax, tech and also trade is somehow connected with the size of your population) and give chivalry to your governors, boosting growth even more and this can be aplied to castles by moving your high chivalry governors to castles.

The result is, usually, an epic win. The first turns can be tight, though.
