Yes, I already had the marian reforms, I built an imperial palace in any city in Italy et cetera. I can recruit legionary cohorts, early legionary cohorts, auxillia etc but, I cant recruit First legionary cohorts in Rome (but I can in custom battles).

I suppose running it in BI isn't save game compatible?
What about running it in Alex?

Hmm weird, just tested it and i have the same thing. I guess there must be something wrong with the hidden_resource but i dont see it.

Switching to BI or ALX engine from RTW, and from BI to ALX is savegame compatible, but it doesn't work in both directions (i.e. from ALX back to RTW). Also, if night battles are disabled in your save, there isn't any possibility to enable them, only starting a new game. Other features like swimming, shield wall, etc. will appear correctly.

Yes, if Augustus TW is modfoldered, because then all changes will be put in a seperate folder and not change the original files.

There are Spartans, they can only be recruited in Sparta though. I don't know when they can be recruited but, it's fairly early in the game. I've fought against them plenty of times.

I think the music is the same as in vanilla.

Recruitment for the Spartans has not been modified in any way and should still be the same as it was in vanilla - only in Sparta and Syracuse at 4th level barracks.

No Aor (with the exception of the vanilla AoR)! You'll have to rely on mercenary units!
