Do you prefer managing a microfaction or a huge empire like Kshah or Nov?
I prefer smaller factions personally and expanding slowly being mainly on the defensive. Portugal are awesome for that![]()
Large empire
Small empire
Both
Doesn't matter

on vh it seems like large empires are weaker
because it seems like armies are being spawned which makes large and small kingdoms pretty much similiar in military strength
so the difference is that larger empires draw attention and make enemies
the most extreme example is the HRE
as a computer player on vh they always always lose in the early campaign
while norway usually gets to be the strongest power in europe
of course strategic position is also important
as kshah you will have the best position
but germany france hungary and byzatium are pretty hard to play without loading all the time
I would actually like to play some of the factions like Byzzies but start with only 1 or 2 regions.

I like small factions like you Thotiate, but exept small i like isolated, you know, they dont have alliaces, enemises. You are making them

Norway is a good substitute: you can go anywhere you like and just conquer the world with that small faction, which I also prefer to do. Large empires are just too easy to manage.

Not really. To manage a huge empire is very hard in my point of view. In fact I find it very easy to do this with teutons, Aragon or Scotland. With HRE, byzantines or turks is just a nightmare. First the settlements management is time eater, distance mean hard to get at a hot spot, corruption is big and you face many enemies not just 1 or 2.

As the ERE you're filthy rich at start and your armies are easily strong enough to defend your lands from say, 5 enemies at the same time. The HRE is a bit more tricky, but in early campaign you've got enough border areas to stabilize diplomacy so you won't fight on every possible front. Never tried the Turks, though, probably because I don't like the huge mountains that seperate their provinces.

Try late era with latin empire submod or 1450 campaign in RR-RC.

The problem is that the computer players get money when they run dry - which makes small kingdoms very powerful, since they have endless revenue to defend a limited amount of land.
This does not accurately reflect how larger empires should have more resources and thus be more powerful, albeit with a larger area to defend.
The game development business is one of bottomless greed, pitiless cruelty, venal treachery, rampant competition, low politics and boundless personal ambition. New game series are rising, and others are starting their long slide into obscurity and defeat.
Perhaps decreasing corruption can solve the difficulty of managing large empires. I too had a hard time using the Byzantine Empire.. Lost 3 provinces before I finally managed to conquer Middle Europe and the Turkish lands.

On unmodded M2 I used to play as Venice and donate all lands apart from Iraklion. Then I would take the Mediterranean islands and be happy with that. So yeah, I prefer starting as a smaller nation, and quite a lot of the time prefer to stay as a small nation.
my fav nation is england, but i have no issue playing huge or small nations. i like'em all.
I prefer starting small. If I do start with a big empire, I feel like someone else already did my job. Big empires just don't feel like my empires...
