Default So AVG bricked thousands of computers with a mandatory update...

The update rendered both Windows 7 and Windows Vista inoperable. When booting users are greeted by the infamous "Blue Screen of Death" (BSoD), and the system reboots in an endless cycle of bad computer karma.
So how did AVG manage to screw up this badly? Obviously they don't test their updates before letting everyone download them.

This update affected the 64bit version of Vista and Windows 7.

    AVG Ftw.

I actually use it, but I only update once a month or so. Good thing this came up before I decided to update. It's not that bad, but it shouldn't be the only AV/security measure you use. Uses much less system resources on scans than AVAST.

Weird I didn't have any sort of problems and I update daily.

Who knows how long it took for them to pull the update. If you weren't on at the time then you would have been fine.

Yes. Current updates seem to have fixed the problem.

Wait - so this update made the system continuously reboot? How does that get sorted out - even if an update did solve the issue, how will people with that problem get into their system so the update can be applied?

So glad that didn't affect me!!

Edit: The article says that Microsoft Security Essentials does a good job - is that so? I've used AVG for ages, but after hearing this, I'm considering other options...

That's not the first time this has happened with AVG. Microsoft Security Essentials is a fine AV combined with MAM and spybot etc.Just be sure to backup or image your system regularly. You can't be too paranoid about this stuff it's gonna happen.

A year or so ago they had the same issue, though I think those were in Spain and some other european country.

I have Spybot S&D and Adaware - would they make a good team with MSE? What's MAM?

I had so such trouble with my AVG.

Though could notice on other computer that it conflicted with Commodo firewall.
