    Light infantry or line?
    They were 200 men per company like all hungarian companies in austrian army. Their behavior was more "light" than "line" but their numbers were 100% line infantry .Also their battalions were like hungarians (line inf). I think CA made a mistake here.

    Grenzers were primarily light troops

    "The Grenzers provided the Austrian Army with a kind of light infantry and were particularly suited to scouting and skirmishing in open order"
    Never argue with an idiot;
    He'll drag you down to his level and beat you by experience.

    We were Grenzers! And we were defently light troops cause we lacked discipline and liked to fight in unconventional ways!

    They were considered by army officials as something between light and line infantry.The point is that grenz company (in NTW) must have 160 men not 120.

    The Grenzer formed a screen against Ottoman incursion in the Border region and from the 1740s acted as light infantry for the Army.

    In the Austrian Army light infantry duties - scouting & skirmishing - were entrusted to the Grenzer though there were complaints that training them as line infantry had spoled their natural aptitude for the light infantry. duties. According to Bowden (Armies of the Danube 1809, page 13) by 1805 they were rarely deployed in skirmish order, preferring instead to meet the enemy in column formation, but Archduke Charles realising the importance of adequate light infantry endeavoured to use them with open order tactics, so by 1809 they were once again deployed and used as light infantry as well as being able to form-up to act as line infantry.

    Yes, but their companies were the same as hungarians (200 men). So in game they must be 160 men per company not 120.

    Both Austria and Prussia had a number of these irregular formations within their armies at the start of the Napoleonic Wars, and its difficult to classify them into any particularl category for wargaming or gaming purposes. They were irregulars and so probably fullfilled several different roles with varying degree's of success. In fact, some formations not only combined a close order and skirmishing role but also included cavalry and artillery elements in their organisation.

    I'm sure that Prince of Darkness is correct when he says above that the main motivation for CA's decision on how to deal with them was probably 'game balance' more specifically in MP battles which seems to have been the main infuence over unit design.
