    Default Error reporting...

Guys, no one is as upset as I am that people are having problems with RS2. After 3 years of back breaking, mind numbing, wee-hours work on this beast, to have people report crashing, frustrations, errors, and irritation is really a downer. I am seriously tempted to just quit and disappear because of how frustrated I am by all this. I can continue to mod my own game in peace and not have to be concerned with all this, but then I remember that a lot of people put a megaton of work into this...and just walking away is a cop-out. So here's the deal....I need help from all of you.

First of all, I need all of you to realized that this game is old by any and all standards. This game was written for Windows98, and since that time there have been released Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows7. With the exception of Windows XP (up to Service Pack2), none of these OS's are particularly fond or nice to this game. The reason for this is that video, DirectX, and the way Windows handles software installed into the 'Program Files' folder have all changed a lot. So there are various dangers involved with running an older game like this. You really can't just install RTW anymore (or any mod for it) and automatically expect that it's just going to work great, because this game can no longer even detect or deal with some things in the environment into which it gets installed. Security issues, Steam, and various video card 'quirks' are all going to come into play here, so the USER is going to have to have some smarts, and may well have to do some experimenting to make things work on his or her PC.

Secondly, I have recommended...HIGHLY....that people create a separate folder for RS2...copying a working RTW\BI\Alex installation into another folder NOT in the 'Program Files' folder because I KNOW that Windows XP Service Pack3, Vista, and Windows7 have security measures in place that will very likely cause problems with an install in Program Files. Sure, you may NOT have problems, but I know that such installs have caused problems. And yet, I see that people ignored this advice and installed RS2 there anyway. That's fine, you can do whatever you please. But ignoring the advice we gave as a Team really does put the brunt of the resulting problems on your own head. We made these recommendations for excellent reasons, so they should be followed.

Thirdly, I need to find some 'pattern' to the errors people are reporting that can direct me to the causes. Right now, I see people who are playing and having few problems (other than with the botched RS2-Patch file that was in the wrong place, or just the normal RTW stuff), and others who are having all kinds of issues. So what is needed is better error reporting. Since there seems to be no RTW generated error in most of these cases, I suspect there may be a trait trigger issue or an issue that is specific to 'something'. That something may be using ALEX, or it may be specific to not having unit shaders on, or using RTW's anti-aliasing, or using 'auto_save' (set to TRUE) or 'Quicksave', which is the same thing. So what I'm asking is that people who are having issues with RS2 would put the following information in this thread so that I can get some idea of what's going on:

    1. The EXE you are playing with (RTW, BI, ALEX)
    2. Are you using RTW's anti-aliasing (checked in Options, or set to anything other than NONE).
    3. Have you set 'auto-save' to 'FALSE' in preferences.txt. (Bear in mind that this has to be done in EVERY modfoldered campaign. Each one has it's OWN 'preferences.txt', so you either need to copy one you've changed into the modfoldered campaign, or edit it yourself. Just changing the one in the Main RTW folder will have no effect on any of the modfoldered campaigns.)
    4. Are you using Steam.

(Regarding Steam: This particular means of acquiring games was, as far as I know, made available as a way for game companies to update their software seamlessly. Well, RTW is NEVER going to be updated. I really don't why it was even offered there, except maybe as a way for Sega to squeeze a few more bucks out of an old game.....but it is a problematic way of using RTW when it comes to mods like RS2. We did our best to try and make RTW\RS2 work in Steam, but if you are having a lot of issues with it, I would recommend spending the 9.95 USD or whatever seriously cheap amount it is to acquire the CD's and install the game normally.)

Thank you all for your patience and help.

    So let's start this:

    1. BI.exe
    2. no AA
    3. no autosave, no quicksave
    4. no Steam

(other informations: problem: CTD near end of loading bar mostly after heroic wins against multiple enemy armys; using 4 GB RAM, made the exe recognizing that; decent video card)

edit: waiting before clicking the button does NOT help me

    I didn't waited enough? Maybe.

Autosave:True (because I use it- has never cause me an issue in vanilla or RS)
    No

Same issue- Crash after kicking AI's backside (once load bar is complete), works fine if autoresovled (losing quite a few soldiers).
Polybian cohorts using testuedos (if thats a bug? I think its fine, as I'm sure people had the common sense to holde shields above their heads while being shot at...)

There is evidence...though scant....that Scipio used testudo at the siege of New Carthage. That's why they were given the formation.

If people are having the issue with battles CTD'ing afterwords, with Auto-save true or false, then that says something...autosave isn't the issue. BUT, autosave is a KNOWN issue, and a known RTW bug. Using it is inviting CTD's.

    1-BI.exe
    2-no AA
    3-yes, Auto save is false
    4-no Steam

    OS: Win7 x64
    4gb Patch
ATI video card with latest drivers

I have a two-partitions hard drive with RS in the secondary partition (D: ). It is not installed, I used a backed up folder of vanilla RTW and put RS II in there. Besides, I have another copy of RTW, this one is properly installed and in D: too, which I use for foldered mods.

A little OT: why the hell did Creative Assembly develop RTW, a 2004 game, on Win98 if WinXP was released in 2002?

Sorry this is causing you grief dvk, after all your hard work.

I didn't know that XP with sp3 could cause problems with the game in Prog Files so am going to reinstall onto C: and see if that helps.

Dont let it get you down mate.

Is there any evidence that alex.exe is causing problems? If so I will try it on bi.exe.

Not ctd related but should be of interest.

Problem: All elephants show a defense value of 2 (1 armour, 1 def. skill) on the unit card.

Possible solution: I came to believe that the game is reading the "stat_sec_armour" line because it shows "1, 1" for all elephants in the EDU. Also I find out from reading a M2 EDU's notes that
stat_sec_armour - Details of animal's or vehicle's defenses (note riden horses do not have a separate defence)
so I copy pasted the elephants' "stat_pri_armour" values into the "stat_sec_armour" line and voila, the proper defense values are shown:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Unless I'm missing something about how RTW works and reads its data this should have fixed it. I don't suppose the game displays the "stat_sec_armour" data but actually uses the "stat_pri_armour" ones?

Thanks bud, I'll look into that. You are correct that an elephant and equipment have stat_sec_armour.

For everyone else, I may have found the issue that has been paining me the last week. It did seem odd that RS2, which was very stable aside from a couple 'self-induced' issues, all of a sudden started CTD'ing after battles...a lot. I just couldn't think of anything that I had changed or done to cause this. And, as it turned out, it wasn't anything I had changed. It could well be the Battle Counter which, when Jon Arbuckle wrote the triggers, included a conditional that was apparently a known 'buggy' bit of code. I had no idea, but after some research today discovered that modders don't use this particular conditional for that reason. So, I have changed the trait triggers in that area that used it, and hopefully this will eliminate that issue.

If you are having the after battle CTD issues, please give the following file a try. Just put it in the 'data' folder of the campaign you are playing, and see what happens. Delete map.rwm before restarting the campaign. It should be save game compatible....if you got far enough to save anything.

Thanks you for all your efforts Dvk. With a little luck I'm going to start Ptolemaic campaign and see how it goes, both in regard to ctds and elephants.

Just a small note. If it indeed turns out that the "stat_sec_armour" line is the one that's supposed to be used for elephants keep in mind that, unlike "stat_pri_armour" it has no shield value so you may need to adjust your elephant stats.

Since I used 4GB patch I rarely get a CTD but when I installed 2.1 patch I had no battle result music so I was trying to see in descr_sounds_music why not and with no help so I deleted that file and dunno how but battle result music came back but not as same as the files that should play at end of battles, for example everytime I win on battle map I get same music Happy_ending.mp3 but as u can see there is different music for different battle results. Also I have noticed that in battles sometimes music just stop playing same in campaign map using alt+m to restart it helps and finally about the CTD issues it happens mostly with heroic battle(maybe because every battle play me a victory music Happy_ending.mp3 might have to do something about it) I am starting to think that music has to do with it since it have issues to play during that battle.

    Win7 x64, ATI card, and 4gb patch.

I have been lurking here for a long time and would first like to express my appreciation for all the work this mod team has done in revitalizing RTW and secondly provide some feedback to help fix the patch.

    1. I have a battle related issue but it is not the end of battle problem that most seem to be having but the beginning of the battle. In the first battle against Hannibal, if I am ambushed and not taken by surprise I am able to load the battle, fight it, and exit the battle fine. If I am ambushed and taken by surprise, the battle begins to load and CTDs with no error message, even with the addition of the above posted trait fix. I tried this with BI instead of Alex and am able to load, fight, and exit both scenarios safely. Potentially this is somehow an Alex specific battle issue.

    2. Somewhat less related but I have seen people posting about naked fanatics crashing the first battle; if unit shaders are turned off the naked fanatics crash Rome, BI, and Alex for me but work fine with unit shaders enabled.

Hope this helps and keep up the good work dvk.

No CTD in 2.0, a lot of CTD in 2.1 after heroic victory.
I woke up at 5:00 am, and went here to check any the fix update. (Actually, I had been doing so for several days. That is how much we love your mod and support your guys.)
That fix WORK for me so far. I put it in the data folder and play_rome 's data folder(I played rome). Now I can smoothly go though a heroic victory which used to cause a CTD before.
Again thank you for your effort, RS team
