Default My diplomat killed a foreign merchant

Playing 6.3, Lithuania, early. I sent a diplomat towards the polish lands after having conquered polotosk and build a town hall. I sent the diplomat to a seemingly unoccupied honey resource, and when he arrived the polish merchant trading it (unseen due to FOW) died like he was assasinated. Has anyone ever tried that.

If you trap a merchant so it cannot move out of your way it dies. Its a safety thing. It can happen to any faction, even you! I think.

This is most common with rebels, but it can happen to player agents too.
I lost a few in the Americas/Kingdoms. since the valleys and mountain passes are very narrow, and indians have lots of agents/armies, you can lost your agents on occasion.

Sure the merchant was Polish, and not Rebel?
Rebel merchants have no movement, and as such, if their place on the map are occopied (as by your diplomat), then he simply dies because he have no where else to move-

Maybe your diplomat dislikes honey to the point that it makes him violent.

Maybe the merchant was old, and lost his movement points?

Yep, it should be 100% the case. Got the same issue, mine merchant killed the norwegian one, since he was too old, thus had no movement points.

I tried backtracking a bit, and it seems it was an independant merchant after all. I have not managed to kill other merchants this way.
