So I see barbarian units in Macedon and a lot of foreign units in other nations? Why is this? Really doesn't make the factions distinct at all. Do these units come in the campaign game to?

those are all the units a faction can raise on the campaign. if you notice there are a factions own units that no one else can recruit and then you'll notice there are units like (Celtic levy spearmen) for example that can be recruited by everyone. the units in battle mode are meant to represent a factions entire roster not just thier main factional units.
There just isn't a way to please everyone. Some players prefer to have a mixture of units to use in a custom battle others don't. At leasr by haivng them there the players that don't like to use them don't have to and the ones that like using them can use them....
You can always add the NO_CUSTOM attribute in the export_descr_unit.txt file.

At least you guy can separate the core troops from the mercenary ones in the customize army window, can't you?
When playing custom battle I often (accidentally, mostly because of the auto button) have Greek phalanx in Celtic armies or celtic warriors in Parthian armies. A very unhistorical feeling.![]()

iirc, the factional troops are "first" in the list. The mercenaries/aor units after them.
Buildup of that screen is like this
factional infantry, from weakest to strongest > factional cavalry, from weakest to strongest > siege equipment > other units.
Just select your own armies![]()
That's so wrong![]()
