    Default New to the series

I used to browse this forum from time to time, and thought it was really interesting.
So on the weekend I went and picked up "A Game of Thrones" and I am loving it!
I'm really looking forward to Version 1, and am a bit tempted to try out the current version of Westeros. But I have a question:

As experts on this series (), do you guys think that I should catch up with the books before playing this mod? I would hate to spoil anything.

The current version of the mod doesn't spoil a whole lot that I can remember but I would definitely catch up with the books before browsing these forums too much.

Thanks for the speedy reply! I probably shouldn't be making assumptions (considering I'm only 200 pages in), but I'm looking forward to putting some Lannisters to the sword

The real triumph of the series is that it shifts your perceptions of characters throughout. You'll see things differently from chapter to chapter

Kind of envious of you; wish I could read them all again afresh! Oh, and heed Darkstar's warning. Most stuff here is spoilered, but be wary!

Don`t read a single thread here. They will spoil parts.

I`d first read the books and then play the mod. There are only small spoilers; But well, the mod isn`t that good at the moment that i`d trade even a little suprise for some hours of gameplay.

Next version will be awesome, though.

The mod will spoil a major plot point from the first novel. Avoid loading it until you've finished reading A Game of Thrones, would be my advice.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!
I think I'll play after catching up or when Version 1 comes out - whichever comes first

It shouldn't be too difficult: it's a lot easier to hide a book in class than it is a computer

Definitely one of the best series ever! I just ordered online the last 2 books (mine is the Portuguese version, which is 8 books, as each of the "official" books is divided into 2 parts).

Soon I'll be reading A Feast for Crows and then The Iron Sea

The downside of reading such a great series is that it's always over too fast. Over the past few months I've found it impossible to get into a good book, and then AGoT came into my life and I've read the first two in about two weeks. I don't want it to end and at the pace I'm reading it'll all be over in a few months (until the last two come out) is sad

If it makes you feel any better georrge rr martin himself went through the same thing when he read lord of the rings for the first time. iirc he raced through most of the book and then started reading things really slowly when he got to 200 pages from the end as he realised that there was only a quarter of this amazing book left before it was entirely finished and he'd never be able to read it again for the first time.

My average for reading books is 2-3 days. But I always re-read them numerous times so..

Yes well I don't read non-stop for twelve ours, nor do I skip pages or read stupidly fast and miss half of the story. Two days for a thousand word novel is just silly unless you spend a good portion of you day reading.

Well that would be pretty easy

Anyway, I don't have that much time, I only really read in the evenings, so 2-3 weeks for me to get through one is a good pace.

I carry the book I'm reading to school so whenever I have a break or when I really don't have anything to do (such as in some classes) I pick it out and read it whenever I can, plus when I have a new book I replace the time I'm on the computer to read, so I have a really lot of time left, especially at night. Reading it's just one of those pleasures that when you finish it, you want to do it again.

Besides I read really really fast, but not the "skip half of the words in a line" fast... nor do I skip pages or "scenes"...on the other hand I know people who take MONTHS or even half a year to read a 500-so page book. And they read for hours every day. I just can't understand how that's possible o_O

Am I one of the only ones who does all of the character voices in my head? I mentally act it all out. I've even brought in various dialects and accents depending on the characters background and their region of origin. Sometimes I re-read certain passages when they're really epic, to make it sink in more. I like to read at a pace that allows me to drink everything in and imagine it all taking place in real-time.

I don't do voices for every character, but I do it every now and then when I come across a particularly good line. Like "A Lannister always pays his debts". I re-read that at least four times, since I found the context particularly funny

I've read the series twice, and loved it all the way through. However, as a newly added member to the modding team I thought it would be benficial to read it again. This time, is almost like the very first. A very well thought out story, with layer upon layer of plots and in depth character developement. I wait with held breath for dance of dragons.
