    Default I need a vanilla export_units.txt file.

I am trying to install a dismounted mailed knight unit I downloaded which seems to require adding some text to the export_units file found under medieval II total war/data/text.

However, the file does not exist, a BIN file does exist with the name. After searching the forums I found out it needs to be converted using all kinds of programs. That just seems a bit too difficult for me, can anyone upload the converted vanilla version of this file for me?

There will be +rep for it.

Sorry, but it's policy of the site to not provide any unmodified files.
Installing Python 2.6 and then using the string.bin converter should not be that difficult.

Use string.bin converter (place the files in the data\text folder and run convert_all.bat) and install python 2.6 prior to the conversion.
Also use 2.6 only 32-bit type higher versions are not supported.

I managed to get it to work after a lot of cursing and a few adjustments. The dismounted feudal knights show up, its saying something about unlocalized text or such though for them.

I cant see whats wrong with it though, their description is listed the same as those of all other units in that file.

In the campaign an empty square shows at the recruitment tab which is likely for them, but they cant be recruited, seeing how something about unlocalized text is displayed at the building descriptions under recruiteable units I did place their recruitment correctly so I gues they wont work without text in the campaign.

You didn't add the correct entries to the export_units.txt file.

In EDU each unit has a dictionary line:
    dictionary unit_name_in_export_units
    In export_units you need:

    Code:
    {unit_name_in_export_units} Unit Name in Game
{unit_name_in_export_units_desc} Long descr that appears when view a unit's info screen
{unit_name_in_export_units_desc_short} Short descr that appears when selecting armies for custom/MP battles

EDU? whats that? nothing was mentioned in that download about an EDU.

I noticed the unit is recruiteable, it took a turn for it to show on recruitment, and the replenish time before being recruiteable.

Change the variables in the export_descr_buildings.txt file aka EDB.

    Lets take a example:-
    recruit_pool "Knights Templar" 1 0.5 4 1 requires factions { england, scotland, france, denmark, milan,}
Now there are 4 numbers in the above line:-

    • the number "1" in blue tells the number of units available to us from the start.
    • the number "0.5" in red is the rate of replenishment after which it will be available again.
    • the number "4" in green is the no. of max units available or recruitable.
    • the number "1" in orange represents the starting experience of the unit the limit is 9(3 sets of bronze, silver and gold chevrons).

Read the EDB guide for more detailed info.

    Also EDCT=export_descr_character_traits.txt file
    EDA=export_descr_ancillaries.txt file.

    BMDB aka modeldb = battle_models.modeldb

Yeah i think thats all about it.

If the description isn't showing up as you say then Squid's post holds the answer.

I'd quote it rather than linking, but since Squid's quoted the info in his own post, I cannot. Use code tags perhaps, Mr Squid

I'd have used code tags, but they don't get color coded, so quote tags it is.

It just wont show up no matter what I do. Heres a copy of both how the mailed knights are written down in the file and the two units above, both ships since I placed it at the end of the list as instructed. It does all appear in a single line in the file by the way.

War Galleys are larger than normal galleys, and carry more tonnage as a result of being equipped with siege weapons like ballista or catapults, and having a larger compliment of oarsmen and soldiers onboard. The standard tactic for engaging is to disable the opposing ships' sails then ram and board it.

Delete it's relevant .bin file and if your .txt is not corrupt then it will regenerate from .txt file.
And btw you are playing the game with IO command in your .cfg right?

    the EDU entry is Dismounted_Mailed_Knights.

I also removed that bin file as in the instructions and I did already change that IO command earlier when I wanted to remove some visual upgrades from showing up on units (such as templar knights)

I meant I wanted to see the actual full EDU entry for the unit.
