I believe I have found the simplest way to install Third Age Total War without modifying vanilla folders or screwing around manually editing Registry settings. Here's a step-by-step for how to install this mod on Steam:
1) Download part 1 of the latest full version. As of now, that's version 2.0.
2) Install the file, but make sure to change the directory during the installation:
64-bit Windows Users:
From - C:\Program Files (x86)\SEGA\Medieval II Total War
To - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war
32-bit Windows Users:
From - C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War
To - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war
3) Follow the same steps with part 2. Don't forget to change the installation path like you did in Step 2.
4) Install any incremental patches. As of this writing, the only current incremental patch is patch 2.1. Don't forget to change the installation path like you did in Step 2.
5) Download the Kingdoms Launcher App designed by Squid. This program modifies the existing Steam launcher for the game and allows us to add in Third Age as an option to the Play button.
6) Run the Kingdoms Launcher App. Click File--> New Mod and use these details:
7) Run Kingdoms from within Steam. You should see this when you click the Play button:
8) Click the mod on the list and start playing
Troubleshooting:
I installed the mod, but there is no Third_Age subfolder in medieval ii total war/mods!
You probably installed the mod to it's default location path instead of to the Steam directory. See Step 2.
I've gotten the game working, but parts of the GUI are white!
Download and install Patch 2.1
