For armor, you need a blacksmith of the appropriate level. High-tier units cannot upgrade armor in low-level smithies.

For melee units, you need a Swordsmiths' Guild.

For gunpowder, you need an Alchemists' Lab.

I don't think you can upgrade the weapons of bows and crossbows...

For chevrons, just have your unit kill lots of things in battle.

Your units will also gain experience from capturing routing units.

A small exploit of the game mechanics involves using an understrength cavalry unit to chase down all the routers. Due to their low numbers and a lot of captives, they will quickly gain experience. Send them back to your castle to replenish and then start using that gold chevron unit to replenish other understrength units. It may take a few turns, but you would quickly gain multiple units of mailed knights with gold or silver chevrons.

Please tell me how to do this? Ive seen no documentation in the book, seen no instructions on here, read about it a bit, adn havent been able to figure out on my own.
Only thing ive figured out is retraining to get up to strength.

Or is this soemthing that came about in Kingdoms? I play SS4.1, since thats the "best" mod for what I am looking for that works without having kingdoms..

To combine units, take both your understrength units and put them in one army/settlement, then simply take one of the unit cards and drag it over the other. Note that the unit you're dragging will be the one giving up men, so if you're doing this to boost chevrons then you must drag the unit with more chevrons to the one with less, otherwise your veteran unit will gain a bunch of noobs in its ranks and lose exp. Also, if the units you're combining don't add up or add up exactly to a full strength unit, they will merge completely and you'll only have one unit remaining.
