Default The DLV Hermit - Ask any questions regarding DLV game mechanics

Inspired by Tokus' hostile take-over of this thread, a scholarly thread is established for the purpose
of helping disorientated DLV addicts in need. If you got any questions about how DLV
mechanics works, or just like pointer on how to circumvent issues within the game - Then this is
the place to settle both your griefs and questions among the hopeless.

So, in the great words of the Holy Church of Repman and the policy's of our Total Addict Rehab
Centre, I'll writer you the prescription for you to take a pause from life and how to answer some
    fundamental questions... about DLV.

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

Yes, and well compile them into a neat mod that pops up with events in game to explain the best aspects (while you play).

Kudos again to a great mod.

In order of the hijacking of the aforementioned thread, I'd be honored to reciprocate by asking the first question:

General Topic: Dungeons & Rebellious Generals
    Background:
I've been through a few campaigns where faction leaders have ticked off the nobility to such an extent that they've rebelled. I know that once a rebellious general is moved into the capital at the same time as the faction leader is there, you are supposed to be given an option to either (a) imprison the general; or, (b) buy him off for 3000 florins.

    Issue/Problem:
Regardless which option I select I get a ctd. I've seen in several other posts that this is a game feature that is busted and this is what is supposed to happen, but in other posts it has been implied that it did work at least once and then stopped working.
Is this indeed a kaput game element? If so, is there a known fix or a workaround? In a previous thread I had heard it suggested that console commands could be used to manually send the gaffer to the dungeon or buy him off. Alas, my console command skills are weak (i.e., completely lacking) and I'm not sure what commands would be needed nor if they would even work.

Thanks to all in advance and great idea for this thread.

Bandicoot that CTD issue is a bug and BB's fault, and will be fixed ... Bah, was gonna say 'at the next update' but...

Here is a fixed campaign_script.txt : Attachment 122530 (contains many other fixes also...)

    It goes in ..\DLV_ext\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign

Start a new campaign if you can tear yourself from the current one. Enjoy

To use the great generosity of Sivilombudsmannen (aka Wille the Hermit) I would like to ask about the training of field generals. After the finish their education I could train then with a real general for some turns.
So my question is: How that works?
    thanks in advance.

I just started playing DLV all together for the first time about a week ago and have started several campaigns (am update with 6.2, caught that campaign script update above and will use in future as well), haven't gone extremely deep in any of them yet but my query is regarding the birth of offspring of my family members, I haven't seen it at all yet and my 2nd generation line is from 50-30some years old, some with the delightful "robust wife" trait.

Even tried cheating in the WifeIsFertile trait and Apothecary Ancil to see if it would at least produce but still nada. Am I just asking prematurely and not being patient enough of this perhaps?

Have played fairly deep into 2nd gen with Ireland, Sicily and Papal States

Also tried leaving family members in settlements for several turns to spawn some knockin of the boots but

M2:TW allows births and adoptions only if you have enough provinces. I don't know what the ratio is. Get a new province, or get some family killed, and births should start occuring.

The only way to preemptively manage this situation is by refusing marriage. Basically we have choose which branches of the family tree we want to grow by allowing marriage, and otherwise refuse it.

By the way that campaign_script above is only for BB users. I've removed it from that post now anyway, since it's included in the latest update.

The obvious redundancy is to state the obvious: Never get close to civil wars in the first place, ever. I also haven't paid any attention to these codes and what they are, so I can't tell you about those in particular.

To the beef of my argument, I recently downloaded couple of save games from my addict-at-arms Tokus and managed to avert his Civil war. Not just once, but I reproduced this 3 times on 2 different save games. I suspect these civil wars were not newly made, since the game was all the way in their 400'th turn, and thus my thought are that any such game can be saved.

Feel free to upload a save game for me to see if this is more then another tokus fable. (Do make sure that it's from a 6.2 + BB2.8 game, it's what I currently use).

It looks generally to be a very simple answer. The guide tells the following:
    Field Education + Teaching Generals
Added field training for military students. Those family members who graduate from military school
will have the next 5 years for in the field training where they can learn from an experienced general.
--To obtain field training the student must end the turn in the wilderness and must be standing next
to the general he wishes to learn from. The "teacher" can be in a settlement in which case the student
must end turn standing next to the settlement but still outside.
-- They cannot be in the same army for this to work
-- You can learn Command, Loyalty, Chivalry, Dread, and Piety from more experienced generals
    and governors
-- You can only learn so much without trial by combat (a la you're limited to how many increases
you can obtain during field training)
-- The "teacher" must have at least 4 of the given attribute, with increased chances to learn if the
teacher has 6 or 8 of the given attribute
Tho I've only tried it twice, it's pretty much straight forward. The newly graduated student has a number of 5 years(10 turns) were he can learn via the field, ending his turn next to a military character. He doesn't have to spend every waking moment clinging to his teacher, and can easily take a rest once in a while without the fear of loosing out from his teacher. A teacher includes both a general but also a governor. So, if your student simply can't attend class half-way across the realm in the middle of a crusade, he can find his place next t a high-ranking governor. There is however one penalty to choosing governor:

As seen above in the quote, the student can't learn from his teachers moral, vitality points, attack, etc., but his primary attributes: Command, Loyalty, Chivalry, Dread, and Piety. Now back to the earlier point, since your average governor isn't exactly Genghis Kahn, the student won't learn much else then piety/chivalry and loyalty.

During the students field training, it's a chance for the student to pick up knowledge from his teacher. When the teacher holds 4-5 of any specific attribute, the student has a chance of learning 1+ of said attribute. If the general holds a number of 6-8, my estimation is around 2+. Let me know what your experience on this, because during 4 years (8 turns), my student only received 1+ command from a 5 star grand cross.

It's probably redundant to state this, but field training isn't exactly popular in my book. The primary attributes are among the easiest to excel and master, and there for, sending your fresh general out there to get emo scars and reap attack bonus is preferred in the ten-folds.

Hah When you began to come up with the idea of leaving them in a settlement, then you should have asked a long time ago my friend.

Taiji mentioned what's worth saying in regards to FM, but I'll add that my observation is about 1 character = 1 settlement ~ +/-. I got 23 settlements in my current Venetian campaign, and ruffly the same amount of characters. Ergo, expanding settlements should make more babies pop up very fast. If you still have problems bringing up new babies, then try a larger faction.

Once you get to a comfortable fortress w. Baron's Stable, you will be able to recruit Generals (non-FM) directly as any other unit. Thus eliminating the great plague of fostering child's for 24 nail-biting turns.

    thanks fellas!

Yeah I expand slowly, once I collected some territory in my Sicily campaign I started getting all kinds of new influentials and sponsorships. I have 5 or 6 territories now and a pretty vast family tree with lots of little bambinos dropping in

lots of interesting dynamics to this mod, great fun!

As for game mechanics, are there any factions in DLV that can benefit from heresy or paganism in any way? I'm assuming no. As far as I can tell, I can use priests against heretics, but not against a horde of pagan priests and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong there.

@Danest, Lithuania and (I believe) the Mongols are both pagan nations in the game, so yes, they benefit just like you do with a catholic faction and a priest. To get rid of Imans and Pagan priests, you need to assassinate them unless you're playing papal states and get an Inquisitor (he can get rid of any character on the map as long as he/she is not in a city/castle/fort).

Alright, I'm stuck in a constant state of rebellion.

Playing as Ireland. year 1261. I control only the whole of Ireland, all settlements all fortresses. I got some crappy trait somewhere along the line in my royal lineage inspiring of discontent, think I accidentally left a levy on the nobles on for 2-3 turns in a row instead of just one ever 5 or so. Anyways, I've combated half a dozen "Rebel!"/"Your are NOT my Sovereign" generals. At one point I had 3 of these generals, one of those d lickers lived to be 96yrs old even (i can't make assassins yet, rebellion set me back 20 govt pts etc).

I even got to a point of 0 Rebel!/Not Sovereign generals for 3 turns or so, 3/4 stack rebel Army spawning in Cork every 2-3 turns. My economy just strong enough to keep putting down this 3/4 stack every few turns and keep all of Ireland under my banner.

My main problem is, I keep putting off marrying my predominantly female heirs off to worthy subjects. They tend to have 5-6 loyalty rings to start, i OK the marriage, they drop in at Cork, usually 16-18yr old dudes I wait for. Typically, NEXT TURN they get 0 loyalty and rebel!/NOT sovereign trait. Last 2 marriages I got this problem, after having got lucky losing 2 rebel generals to plague and 1 to being damn near a century old.

How can I stomp out this problem? I've got a governor character in all 5 ireland settlements with great loyalty, but as said, my new marriages keep resulting in rebel aholes and I can't get rid of this Rebellion even when I finally got 0 rebel general characters.

All settlements are green happiness. 120% and up. My 2nd sovereign with the dreaded "inspires discontent" (paraphrase) traits has just died, the 3rd guy has those same traits. How can I stop this if at all?

What does your king do to inspire the nobility? Sit on his arse getting fat?

Have him kill anything available, always releasing the prisoners, never looting cities, etc. Ideally your future king has already proven himself a defender of the realm, but if you mess that up you can usually pull things back with a little bloodshed.

Something that came in to my mind:

Since nowadays child "comes of age" at the age of 12, should we lower some of the children's ages at the start. Example englands first kid to come of age (Cant remember who) is at the second or third turn, and you don't really have the time to build school for them. I believe that it was meant that we would have time to prepare their education and when the original "coming of age" was 16.

I have some trouble getting my crown, historical campaign w/ Turks. My new Sultan is at the capitol (Iconium / Konya) for a few turns now, but never gets the crown.

Maybe that's because the original capital city isn't the same on the 2 campaigns. So...

    - Is It necessarily in the original (first) capitol of the campaign? Then I should move him to Diabekr.
    - Is It in the city where the sovereign gets the "at the capitol" trait? Then It's Iconium... And It's not working
    - or Is It just bugged for this faction?

That's a serious issue because now I'll have a full rebellion on my hands, just because of a game mechanic. It's not like I wanted that.

Does your king have less than 8 ancillaries? Right now I can't think of anything else preventing you gaining the crown after ending the turn with your leader in iconium.

Do you mean more? He has exactly 8 ancillaries including 5 titles. too much maybe?
There's nothing about that on the PDF manual, which is very well made BTW.

8 is the max you can have in m2tw, so you'll need to get rid of one to get the crown.

Pretty certain the manual is Repman's work and I think it's cool too
