For a challenge, I decided to start a vanilla Portugal campaign, VH/VH, with the restriction of only being able to use militia units from cities; ie no castles, mercenaries, or cavalry, just foot soldiers.
To my considerable surprise, it has been remarkably successful! I managed to drive the Moors out of Spain with my starting forces, before sweeping northeast along the coast to Zaragosa, and then moved westward and decimated the Spanish with my stacks of cheap disposable militiamen.
By this point I was literally swimming in cash, and had little trouble bribing or defeating the aggressive French and Milanese on my borders. I had a healthy garrison of 12 spear militia in each city, a boisterous economy and only one major enemy within shouting distance.
I took Scotland and England with two full complements of militia, all experienced and well armed, led by my most capable nobles, and after participating in successful crusades against Toulouse and Tunis I had the pope well on side.
What is most surprising is that the AI doesn't rate my lowly militia as a threat, and does not rush to engage them when I advance, no matter how many i push through their lands with. While casualties run high, I can still overwhelm my enemies with endless waves of militia, and establish large garrisons to protect my holdings.
I have not moved further eastward yet, contenting myself with Spain, Great Britain and North Africa, so I do not know how I will fare against the more mobile armies of Hungary, Russia, Poland and Turkey.
Still, a fun game nonetheless, and definitely one of the richest empires I have commanded.
Has anyone else had success with such tactics?
