    Default another "Which Faction?" poll

Im trying to recreate the Eastern part of the Roman Empire, WITHOUT using Rome! I say again..WITHOUT rome.

In essence, an empire that consists mainly of Anatolia, the Levant, Egypt, and potentially into the east or west into greece. My goal is to consolidate a large empire...then hopefully by the time thats through, the epic showedown with the dominant western power

Id prefer it to be a more eastern mediterranean faction, so..Pergamon, Ptolemies, Greek Cities, Macedon, Pontus, etc, but ill leave it open for nearly all civilized factions.

So, lets see what ya think

I personally am leaning towards the Seleucids myself...feel like if i let my Easternmost provinces up until Babylon rebel, i can concentrate my finances on taking all of Egypt and Asia Minor, and let the Parthians sit tight hopefully....im a bit scared of what would happen if the Parthians got lots of money though and then attacked me....*gulp*

Seleucids, most unique unit roster. True Hellenistic army.

If you can avoid fighting early, relocate your capital towards Babylon, and build high walls on your border with Parthia you will be able to keep all of your settlements and get a few denari.

IMO its a more entertaining and challenging campaign than Pergamom and you get Cataphract Elephants!

Hopefully by the time you take Egypt and Asia Minor you will have a strong Macedon to go up against, opening up routes to Dacia and Rome.

Macedon. Truly Hellenic, powerful army and economy, and ass-kicker overall.

Pergamon seem the logical choice to me. They start in a relatively good position with an alliance to the Ptolemaics (SP?)
They also have great heavy infantry and decent cavalry.

The Late Libyan spearmen are awesome, as are the sacred band infantry, but i think im still biased towards the sheer beauty of the Seleucid units. Carthage i get that rag-tag yet motivated feel (as with sparta). Sleucids i get a "ha, Rome only won historically because our commanders forgot the cavalry, were so much better and prettier then your professional state-sponsored army"

    Greek cities!!

Correct me if I am wrong but I read somewhere that a few hundred years after Rome fell the Eastern Roman Empire adopted Greek as the official language and also, at those times I believe most nations didn't call them The Byzantine empire but "The Greek Empire".

Also, the Greek CS got some BAMF units!!!

Inhabitants of the Eastern Roman Empire never stopped calling themselves roman. Yes they spoke greek, but they always called themselves roman. If i remember correctly it was emphasized by several articles i read.

    LOL

Must've been high when I read that article about the "greek empire" (if I did read anything... I knew it! I got to stop mixing ol' cannabis with Sci-Fi/Internet/Harry Potter/ and/or Hamsters...)

Tho fur certain I kno that they didn't call themselves Byzantines (or whatevur) until much later...

alas, they also never called themselves byzantine German historians after the fall of Constantinopel invented the term, and it apparently stuck. The seljuks even named them selves the new roman empire for a time after they took Constantinopel. I always cringe when i hear someone call the eastern roman empire ''The byzantine empire''. The name itself has absolutly no reason to exist, as NO one called the Romans that. It is however true that the Greek and Roman culture were mingling more and more. The last Eastern Roman Emperor said shortly before the fall of contantinopel to his soldiers that they must remember that they are the descendants of both Greeks and Romans.

Yes but the Greek Cities dont have a very good AOR outside of historically greek territories. My plan is to forge an Empire that goes from at least the Ionian coast across to the Zargos mountains as my Eastern border, fortified to protect against the Parthians. The seleucids have most of this, but the fun would be in consolidating and capturing beyond greece even...maybe go as far as Justinian did
