    Default Question Rand

    Hello all. Hopefully someone can clear this up for me. It's about the random number generated each turn for the target faction via the campaign_ai_db file. I know it ranges from 1.0-0.0

    Im confused about the values. Would rand="0.5" be a 50% chance of something happening? And like wise would rand="1.0" mean there an added 100% chance of something? Hopefully someone can clear this up.

    Rand means a random value.
    A random number is generated each turn for each target faction. The number is between 0.0 and 1.0 however there is no limit to the decimal value. 0.00000127 is as likely to occur as 0.2 This effectively means you can use it to simulate any random number variant. For example
    max_entry rand=“0.333333333”
    Would be a 1 in 3 chance, your could follow this with
    min_entry rand=“0.333333334”
    max_entry rand=“0.666666666”
    And another decision using
    min_entry rand=“0.666666667”
    Thus creating a random number from 1-3 with each having an equal chance.
    Personally we use it as a percentile. Keep in mind that only 1 random number is generated for each target faction each turn so make sure you have a defined use for it.

    I don't see how that is 10%. I see a 10% difference between .7 and .8 maybe? I look at it as a 70% chance as a bare minimum and a maximum chance of 80% and it will fall some where in between.

    "max_entry rand=“0.333333333”
    Would be a 1 in 3 chance, your could follow this with"


    so max_entry rand=".50" would be a 1/2 or 50% chance correct? Or would it be from 0-50 and the chance would fall in between like Roz is saying?

    as for The Savage example - currently I'm thinking the 10% indicates the gap between the .70 and .80 -
    ie in a random distribution between 0 and 1.0, 10% of the rands will fall between those values.
    they could, i think, just as easily be 0.50 and 0.60 and so on.

    from what I read the values in the intro to the file are the default values (and not as I suspected originally) limit of potential values.
    so you can have a min_entry rand of 0.5 and a max_entry rand of 0.5 - without the other.
    because value of 0.5 it would represent a 50% chance in both cases:
    min_entry 0.5 would imply a max_entry (default) of 1.0 - so would be true for any rand value above 0.5
    equally
    max_entry 0.5 works in the reverse way without a min_entry as the default is 0.0
    so again there's a 50% chance of a rand falling between 0.0 and 0.5
