Default Periokoi Phalangites - worth building?

    Hi,

Playing the Greek Cities, I currently have the romans as a protectorate and I can get the Marius Reforms triggered by gifting them a city.

However, is it worth having the Roman's enact the Marius reforms just to get the Periokoi Phalangites?

    cheers

I'd say no. Some other factions get advantages too - certainly Carthage and probably others, so you make other factions stronger without adding anything relevant to your own faction. Armoured phalangites will do just fine!
And you do lose the periokoi hopliltes with the reforms, also something to consider.

Okay thanks. Rome will remain a backwater and I will stick with my armoured phalangites.

    Cheers again!

If you prefer a pike phalanx army over a hoplite phalanx army then definatly yes. But that's a matter of game preference. But if you get bored then why not try it? Although, if you want both the periokoi hoplites and phalangites you can easily remove the "and not marius reforms" and "and marius reforms" from the unit slot in export_descr_buildings. It litteraly only takes a couple of minutes to do and the only way it will effect gameplay is..... you have periokoi phalangites and hoplites.

Assuming you don't want to mod:

Other factions enjoy the following benefits (from marian reforms):
    Egypt - late ethiopian axemen
    Seleucid - Imitation legionaries, Argyraspydes
Carthage - +2 xp to civic light and heavy inf. + civic cavalry
    Gauls - heavy swordsmen

So on the plus-side you get to see and play with new units, on the downside some of the competition gets stronger and you really don't (apart from a marginally better phalanx only recruitable in sparta).

Thanks for all zee feedback. I will probably enable both hoplites and phalangites when I start a new campaign.

    Cheers!
