If you intend to install the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack, follow my other thread for BI installation! :

Things to do , before doing any installation.

If you have RTW installed and

- you have a campaign going
- you have saved games in it
- you have mods added (major CTD causer)

............... Then - delete RTW. -off your hardrive. Say goodbye to your campaigns and mods. Sorry. It's the only way...

How to delete RTW if you have or had mods installed previously:

- First, run the uninstallation process through the windows control panel add/remove software.
- Go back to your hard drive and locate RTW (usually c:/program files/activision/rome-total war)
- Delete anything that stayed over after uninstallation. (delete the Activision folder to be sure and if you don't have other activision games) Mods have a tendency to stay in the folder and if you install RTW again on top of them, they might be corrupting the game later.

Now, if you had no problems playing RTW with your system (meaning that it could handle it) then you are ready to install RTW and BI.

If you had problems before, then do your necessary housekeeping of checking your graphics drivers, sound card drivers, windows updates, virus, spyware...the whole nine yards. Defrag your hard drive too, especially if you had a lot of mods installed.
Start with a clean, working computer. (these, something you should do anyway, even if you had no problems before)

See my Guide on how to get your computer up to speed and how to do some basic maintenance on your PC.
