    Default Rant against Denmark

I am just so...ticked and confused with Denmark I have to vent my frustration! I'm allied with them as the french. Their relation with me is Outstanding. I have given them a region on two separate occasions, and tens of thousands of gold over time. They have Poland to the East, England, Scotland, and Portugal on the island to the west, and they decide to betray me!? One of the top factions with three other allies?

They decided to simultaneously attack Antwerp and Innsbruck. I can actually understand Antwerp Insbruck I'm not sure. I just helped them defeat the HRE and gave them the city above Innsbruck.

I know that this happens in this game, but I'm hurt. It's not like I have huge forces in the lands bordering their faction. Aside from one army I was using to siege the HRE towns. They were once weak, and I built them up with a territory here and there, and piles of Florins.

This has to be a case of the AI being too dumb to live. And when I use the diplomat I always have at their city to ask for a cease fire, it's treated as very demanding. It would be an insult for me to dish out even more money for them to take back such a monumentally stupid act.

Edit: Actually I probably should have posted this in the "your current campaign" thread. Sorry about that.

    I feel your pain, man.
Strike them with a proper all-out offensive and don't hold back.

Ally with Poland to help you fight them, and altough they're not as likely to backstab you, make sure to leave some regions between you two as a buffer.

I'm worried abut allying with Poland because Hungary might decide to attack them, and I'm allied with Hungary. Though Poland is Eyeing a city I just took. Prague I think. I've been having just enough alliances to deal with the four wars I'm in, and I thought I was in the clear, but with Denmark betraying me that means I have more wars than I have alliances to cover them.

Due to the intricate relations the other factions have, I'm at a loss of who I may ally with next. I'm reluctant to ally with a non Catholic faction, but I may need to.

Not big news. The AI has always been bad, and it took me a while to understand how to deal with it. Once you do however, the game becomes much more enjoyable.
Generally to keep faction away from attacking you, you have to keep an eye on your borders. When an army approaches, send one, or two of yours close to the threatened city, thus discouraging an assault. Generally, it may take a couple of turns, but the AI will go against someone else.

Don´t underestimate the power of the greedy... The AI will almost always betray you sooner or later, even though I AM equally confused as you over the fact that the Danes did what they did in your campaign, under those circumstances.
In my experience, the Danes are usually good to ally with early, and are good at maintaining alliances. I have never seen any betrayal from them (it always starts with another of their allies declaring war on me, and they choose the losing side - you can figure out the rest)
I feel with you on this, now go and punish them for stabbing you in the back!

The game would have been a lot more enjoyable if the AI is capable of recognising what a big mistake they made or that it is a bad idea to attack a nation that has supreme power over their own pathetic power. With the way the AIs work, CA is teaching us to bully the weak and then take everything they have.

Chad29, you really should not over focus on making alliances to cover all of your wars. Just put the Danes out of their misery. As long as you can maintain three allies throughout the game and play nice with your captives and captured settlements, you will eventually get an immaculate reputation.

Peace is only good for the cowards. Just attack them, beat their armies, kill their people and sack their cities as I always do!

In Vanilla Denmark where fine albeit boring. With SS they are maniacs and declare war on me every 10 turns or so, suffer tremendous losses trying to siege Antwerp and my allys Poland and France take a territory or two. In a short while they will be stuck on Scandinavia again and Norway seems to be expanding their so hopefully they will be wiped out!

kkaana, have a look at this:

I was England in KGCM, and fought the Teutonics, since they were excommunicated and the Pope loved me, I got a crusade on Königsberg

I don't really want to just mow over everyone. I'm hesitant to take the fight to the Danes because I may get them to be friends again. I was hoping for a campaign when I wasn't expanding to every settlement in the globe, and I could have a few allies to act as buffers against the East. However it seems like the only faction that never betrays me is the Papal States.

I've been betrayed by them too. And one time, they took a ship and sailed and besieged Marseille, even if he usually loved the French

I think this is going to be one of my nitpicks about this game. If not being an actual flaw instead of just being a nitpick. I wonder if there's a mod that makes it so the AI never attacks if their relations are Outstanding or Perfect. I had been shelling out thousands of florins every three to five turns, and still hadn't made it to perfect. Though I forget which turn I started doing that.

France is in a good position due to all the cities in its area, so I've been reasonably wealthy. Though I have had to put some construction projects on hold due to wars.

Next French campaign I may try to just keep HRE going because Denmark didn't attack me until just after I beat HRE.

More like never trust factions that border you. I always have problems with factions that border me, but tend to get along with faction that don't unless they're allies of factions that border me. I suppose that's an advantage of being a faction in one of the corners of the map. Like spain and Portugal, who only border France and whoever grabs Tunis. Usually Sicily or Venice.

That might be your problem, right there.

That being said, the AI tends to attack cannon tower fortresses with a stack of peasants and ladders, so you can never really tell whats going on.

I did have troops stationed, though. About ten. Their initial assault was mostly infantry, so many of them got mowed down by crossbowmen, and the ones that cam up the ladders met my dismounted knights. They had another large force, though, which required reinforcements.

I had heard that garrisoning too many would make the other faction wary, so I had about ten units in each castle between Metz, Bern, and Staufen. That's my eastern defensive line.

Speaking from a strategic point of view, I'd rather my castles be spread out, but I couldn't turn Milan or Antwerp into castles for being too far along when I got around to taking them. Besides, coastal settlements get better trade when they're cities anyway and the three listed castles above are landlocked.

An idea if your tired of back stabbing is to destroy all building but let the population live in bordering regions, so they rebel and the AI can't take them over or keep them, make castles settlements and you have rebels as your buffer. Takes abit of work but it keeps things nice and quiet on the home front.

I guess that could work. Settlements that rebel tend to stock powerful forces that aren't easy to take, and you can always ignore the Council when they ask you to retake it.

I also considered giving bordering regions to the Papal States because they're the only faction that doesn't betray me.
