    Auto Resolve is basically -

Number of troops, quality of troops, quality of general, quality of troop stats and the terrain.

However, a unit of Kataphracts would probably win an auto-resolve against a stack of peasants.

Check the Epic HS thread. Apparently the first unit fights the first unit of the opposing force, then if it wins it fights the second unit of the opposing force and so on. So you can tailor your armies.

How do you tailor your armies

I can't change the order of my units. Maybe I can in open field but not in the Cities

Move your general (or the unit that you want to be first in the order of your army) and add the units in the order you want. You can place your general outside a city to do this and then move the army back into the city
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

Does auto-resolve takes battle difficulty in account? The same setting gives you a different outcome when a different battle difficulty is selected at the start?

Ever since going from Medium to Hard I started losing a lot more auto-resolved battles, as well as more soldiers. My style of play didn't change, so I reckon it's battle difficulty that affects it. Don't have any technical evidence to back it up though.

Auto resolve takes only the campaign difficulty into account not the battle difficulty. And only the mêlée stats are taken into account. So missile troops suck in auto calc. It is best to place your best mêlée units first in the order of your stack. So after your general have some heavy infantry. This will make your stack stronger when auto resolving.

Auto-resolve should take into account of the unit's morale. At higher difficulties, the AI's units have much better morale, so you should start losing more men unless you can counter their bonus in morale.
