Icon13 Screw the House rules, whats the use?

Although I agree with many of the rules, like what your doing in battle and the ships but there's just to many. I don't think Im going to follow the dumb rules of only replenishing your legion after 20 turns, filling them with Auxilia in the meantime, I mean comon. The Legions in the game seem like the most powerful unit anyway and can go up against and beat most barbarians. So to confiscate Im going to attempt to beat the game on VH/VH. Has anyone done that before?

This mods rules just really annoying, the house rules , why so many restrictions on the use of legions ? Is it because there so powerful, mostly using those would mean owning the enemy all the time?

The house rules are there to create the special feeling SPQR evokes while playing by the house rules.

Only cheaters have managed to beat the game on VH/VH.

The "replenish every 20 turns" bit, along with a few of the other rules, are to simulate logistical realities of a legion in the field. The Roman military apparatus wasn't sending out a few cohorts every couple of months to make up for casualties taken on the campaign trail. The Legion fought it out with what it had, and then came out of the field to refit.

If following those rules makes the game not fun, just ignore them. They're there to add extra complexity to a game that came out of the box too simple (and therefore uninteresting).

Personally, I ignore the crap out of the rule that says "Don't defend at bridges"...or whatever it is about fighting the open field. I'm just too fond of giggling maliciously as my forces crush the silly AI trying to charge across the bridge. If I ever stop having fun, I can always pull away from the bridges and let them come for me.

Well now, defending bridges doesn't prevent the Marian reforms, does it?

I do run with the FOW off. I just don't enjoy the game with it on. If, someday in the far distant future, I have an impulse that playing with FOW on would be fun, I'll give it a go.

And also remember, the VH/VH actually weakens AI at some points. Tsk tsk. Try completing with sheet and house rules on M/M then come conquering Hard and such.

lol, cze you never change do you? You always were loyal to the old house rules.

myself, though i haven't played spqr in a little while, i always picked the ones that i liked and ignored the others. Like the legion composotion, that one always got ignored by my, i'm rubbish at using the infantry so would always add in extra cavalry, teh equites aren't much cop, but four units charging into the back of an engaged foe usually did the job.

Do the ones that you enjoy, at the end of hte day, the house rules were written by lt because people asked how he liked to play, Cheats are a definate no no, but otherwise, why not? It could be fun sometimes to attack someone with 8 units of elephants, whats the point if you don't find it fun.

though, you do lose your bragging rights... lol

Elephants - no thank you. Infantry iz best but I too do compose my legions pending on the place I deploy them. But the infantry core stays always the same as per house rules. Rest I find optional.
