unit banners gone?

hey,
i havnt played this game in a while and have recently started again, but when i play battle the giant banners that hover over the units have gone
im sure they were there (havnt played in a year) so how do i get these banners to appear because its realy affecting my perfromance

[Praefectus praetorio]

1. Go to your "Medieval II Total War" folder.
2. Find the file preferences.cfg.
3. Right click on it and open it using notepad. (If the file isn't there or has nothing in it, start M2TW and go to the main menu, then quit.)
4. Scroll down to the [video] section and find the line:

show_banners = 0

and change this to

show_banners = 1

Banners are now turned on.

Whenever such things happen just delete the damn .cfg file and it will regenerate(mind you only the default .cfg not of a mod) with default settings.
