Here is a description of the plate :
"In 1799 all regiments of line infantry were issued with the distinctive Bavarian style
'Raupenhelm', to replace the earlier casquet, which remained in use with the army throughouttrailing ends of the chain fastening behind the chin-strap bosses."
the Napoleonic era. The raupenhelm was an elongated black leather helmet with black woolen
caterpillar crest and black leather peak. The front of the raupenhelm was decorated with an oval
brass plate embossed with the Royal Cypher 'MJ' - 1800-1806 (Elector Maximillian Josef), or 'MJK'
- 1806-15 (König Maximillian Josef). The plate was surmounted by a small crown, which was
mounted over the tip of the wool raupe. The front, bass edge of the helmet was decorated with a
narrow brass plate with roll edging which was engraved with the regimental title prior to 1806
but after that date all new issues were plain. The nameplate was fitted to the helmet with a
narrow black leather strap passing around the base of the raupenhelm to fasten at the rear with a
small brass buckle. At the front of the helmet looping below the oval plate was a fine brass chain,
