    Default Nvidia GTX 580

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372324,00.asp

Retail price is $499 which is the same as the GTX480 was. Performance increase is about 30% over the GTX480 but it has a much better stock cooler which promises to keep the card cooler while running quieter. It performs better than the much more expensive 5970 in most every game from the preliminary review I read. So if you're after the best DX11 card on the market then this is the card for me you!

oh sweet, is this for real? I saw the thread title and was like "*scoff*, What does this thing cost, like $2,000?"

The reason i didnt want to buy the gtx 470 is because I heard it runs hot, and I'm sick of video cards that run too hot. I have a 9800 gx2 and the thing is practically a space heater.

the gtx 480 on the other hand sounds sweet but is far too expensive. I'll check into this 580

480 & 470 suffer from the same problems, so if the 470 is undesirable, the 480 is probably worse.

Honestly though, I always thought the GTX 470/480 were heat and/or noise machines, and they are, but it's not as bad as I thought. At high fan speeds, it sounds like a freaking hair dryer, but 60% fan speed and below is quite fine for me in terms of noise. 40% and under, it's basically silent.

Was doing some overclocking testing on my "new" Galaxy GTX 470 (reference design, not the removable fan design) with Furmark and Kombustor and it's not as bad as I was expecting. Under 75% fan speed, I topped out at 88c.

Hot, and loud, but I overclocked the card to 840/1800/1680 (up from 607/1674/1215), a good 35-40% OC on the core and shaders. Memory was disappointing, but I hear memory OC'ing doesn't make a huge difference anyway. I also upped the voltage to 1.087v.

Considering I was expecting those temperatures from stock use, that's pretty good.

Their main issue is power consumption as I believe that the GF100 chip is poorly designed and too much power is used by the tessellation units within the card. I believe every chip fires on full cylinders, even when the required usage is minimal. Wastes more power that way. Apparently, the issue was fixed or reduced with the GF104 chip, and seeing as the 580 is probably based on it, then it won't be as power hungry.

Still on the fence on whether to sidegrade back to AMD. Depends on the prices at Christmas I guess. Performance and overclocking wise, I'm stoked with the 470. I really wanna keep it and put a Gelid Icy Vision or Accelero Extreme Plus on this thing. On the other hand, 6870s provide basically equal performance, for less power.

I got the 470 cheap, it's still cheaper than a new 470, even with the massive price cuts lately. Oh well, depends on the prices of the 6870 I guess. For now though, I'm a Fermi guy and pleasantly surprised with how nice it is.

As for the GTX 580, power consumption is I believe around the same as the 470 (~10% less than the 480) and the performance they say is around 30% more than the GTX 480. The upcoming 6970 is supposedly 20-30% faster than the GTX 480, so pricing will be a big point. I don't think AMD will price a single card at $500, maybe $450, so that may hurt Nvidia if the performance turns out to be similar.

You won't find much on it just yet. Hopefully later this week the reviews will be up.

So tomorrow you can buy one. And the GTX580 is based on the GF104 chip so it is not just a GTX480 with more CUDA cores. Hooray!

For a single card your PSU will be fine http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/N...TX_580/25.html It uses less power than the GTX480.

I read somewhere that the 480 runs cooler than the 470 *shrug*

I have abnormal heat issues with my 9800 gx2 though, speedfan measures it getting up to higher than 110 degrees celsius during long sessions of Empire total war. Which is ridiculous. Near the 115 degree celsius mark my computer just shuts down. This happens a lot so I don't know whats up.

Thats why the next video card I buy needs to be reviewed as reasonable in the heat department. Unfortunately it seems like, as video card technology progresses, these cards just get hotter and hotter and more and more power hungry

Not really. Over a long period of time like 5-10 years, then yes. In terms of the past few generations, heat and power wise, they stay around the same at full tilt. At idle or normal desktop usage, cards have gotten much more efficient. If you're just browsing the net, the GTX 480 is probably more power efficient than a 8800GT.

Secondly, I think something is wrong with your card's cooler. The 9800GX2 is a hot card, but over 100c is just plain abnormal.

you mean the fan on my vid card? You think i can replace it without buying a new card?

Fan could be broken, maybe there's just too much dust, maybe the fan speed is too low, I don't know honestly. You can replace the cooler, but it'll cost oodles and I don't know if you can still find the cooler anymore. Plus it takes up loads of space.

You could always just stick a fan on top of the card and let it blow cool air onto it.

Just plop a couple of fans on top of it and see if it helps any.

The actual fan for the video card is probably replacable but it requires taking apart the graphics card to take it out. Same with a new cooler. Probably not worth doing unless you're 100% sure you won't mess it up.

I have a small aftermarket fan on top of it, but honestly it doesn't help. I don't know whats wrong with my system ,maybe the airflow inside the case is configured all wrong.

I should just bring it to a professional and just have them look at it, configure the fans to have good airflow, etc. Think geek squad would do that?

Doubt it. They'd probably charge $50 for a couple of fans that cost $4 and randomly stick it into your case. Download MSI Afterburner and play around with the fan speed settings. Your fan settings might not work automatically anymore and that could be causing the heat issues. Set the fan speed to 100% and see what happens.

Back to the GTX 580, Lol @ their "groundbreaking" vapor chamber cooling technology. Doesn't Sapphire have like a patent on that?

Obviously not exclusively, but whatever the case no other card has that technology on the stock coolers included in the MSRB price.

    Except for the 5970.

To cool the beast, AMD has stepped up the cooler from a solid copper block to a vapor chamber design, which offers slightly better performance for large surface area needs. Vapor chambers (which are effectively flat heatpipes) have largely been popularized by Sapphire, who uses them on their Vapor-X and other high-end series cards. This is the first time we’ve seen a vapor chamber cooler on a stock card. AMD tells us this cooler is design to keep up with 400W of thermal dissipation.

IIRC 4870x2 was a Vapor Chamber hybrid.

Nvidia's a little late to the game lol

Huh, I never knew that. Well I'm glad they got around to it cause the GTX480's temps sucked.
