Why am I getting such crappy framerates ?

I think my machine is pretty powerful (Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9650 3.00GHz, 6GB Ram, and GTX 470) but it seems to be running NTW very slowly. Fraps showed me an average fps of about 10-15 on one of Napoleon's historical battles (the first one, I think) on very high settings, with AAx2. Funny thing seems to be that even if I lower the overall graphics to High or even Medium, my fps gain is minimal. Does anyone think that's normal ? If not, what should I try ?

I forgot to mention that I run Win 7 64 Ultimate.

Have you installed directx 9.0c, C++ 2005 SP1, and .Net4?

Are your graphics drivers up to date?

I use the lastest 3D Vision drivers (but run the game in 2D as it looks better) and have dirextx 11 installed (I never uninstalled 9.0c, I just assume that version was overwritten). About .Net4 and C++2005 SP1, I don't know what you mean.

You need them all for this old XP game. They are all but .net 4 expressly written for XP and Vista, 7, dx11, and dx10 nothing about them no matter whta some Microsoft salesman says.

Install them and see if it helps. Also try Shader 2 if you haven't.

I'm sorry to sound so dense, but I don't understand. What do I have to install, exactly ? Do I have to uninstall DX11 and leave only 9.0c ? And don't my graphics card drivers give me the latest shader versions ? I also have no idea what .net 4 is.

You do not have to uninstall anything, yet. Just follow these steps:

1. Disable the UAC http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/1...-in-windows-7/ assuming 7, Vista close to the same idea,

Well, I did all the stuff you mentioned and nothing's changed, unfortunately. Still getting framerates between 10-15 fps at the Battle of Lodi, no matter what graphics options I seem to choose. Surely this isn't normal.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Ok, so I tried Shader 2. In fact, I've tried a wide variety of graphics settings, ranging from extreme to bare minimum. The variation in fps is pretty minimal. Could that other guy have been right about my CPU being crappy ?...

That seems weird, I have a "crappier" cpu and I get more fps than that.

I see three things that have been causing some problems.

1. I understand Sound Blaster has out updated Audigy drivers that may help. Are you using Alcheny?

2. You have two sound drivers loaded, Audigy and Microsoft. Need to disable one in Device Manager.

3. Your mic being a different brand and driver maybe playing games with it, too. May want to unplug it for a short test.

1. Yes, I'm using Alchemy and have both its latest version, and the latest drivers for the SB card.
2. I've disabled the MS sound driver.
3. I did that...

So, no changes....[sigh]

Cripes, what's wrong with my system ?... It's underperforming worse than Obama... Any technical sites that anyone can recommend I forward the dxdiag to ?

One thing I've noticed in the Task Manager when I run NTW is that Core 0 seems to be doing most of the work, with Cores 1, 2 and 3 appearing barely active. Is this normal ?

No alt tab out of NTW go to task manager, find NTW process and manual reassign affinity to all cores. Return to game. For whatever reason some systems need this done manually.

I have to do this every time I play.

I have a c2q @ 3.6 with a 470gtx and rarely see below 30-40 fps.

Check to see your gfx card is running at 90-100% too. A low gfx utilisation would be bad.

Personally tweak game settings and make the big decision in nvidia control panel.

How is your performance in other games? Or do you play NTW only?
Are your drivers AA and AF set to application profile? Forcing AA and AF in the control panel conflicts with a lot of games.

If you have no other games for comparison you could try downloading a benchmark like 3D Mark Vantage or 2006 and comparing your results to others. Something's definitely wrong though if you're getting framerates like that.
