So I was looking over imdb cast list for the upcoming (may 6th!) and saw something I must have missed til now, a black actor is cast as Heimdall. A black nordic deity? Really now? Now dont get me wrong obviously its based on Marvel's view of norse mythology which hardly follows the true myths/legends but this seems really awkward casting. Sadly looking around I see white supremist idiots have taken the casting as a personal insult since so many of them seem to follow the nordic/viking imagery.

Thing is, once you move into the comic book realm you're casting doesn't have to be based on culture. It can focus totally on whether the actor can carry the part and carry it well. Let's face it. Idris Elba is awesome.
One thing is for certain: the more profoundly baffled you have been in your life, the more open your mind becomes to new ideas.

Oh yeah I know as I said Marvel barely follows the real mythology itself but this more a "wth" change that just doesnt make much sense except for the fact that there just isnt alot of darker skinned people running Asgard so this kinda of seems like token black guy thing. Then again Im complaining about a company (Marvel) who for years had all Asgardians running around talking like Brits.

I think that in the movie Heimdall will have, instead of a face, a more star/universe/space kind of face, so the race of the actor doesn't really matter
August Strindberg: "There's a view, current at the moment even among quite sensible people, that women, that secondary form of humanity (second to men, the lords and shapers of human civilisation) should in some way become equal with men, or could so be; this is leading to a struggle which is both bizarre and doomed. It's bizarre because a secondary form, by the laws of science, is always going to be a secondary form. Imagine two people, A (a man) and B (a woman). They start to run a race from the same point, C. A (the man) has a speed of, let's say, 100; B (the woman) has a speed of 60. Now, the question is 'Can B ever overtake A?" and the answer is 'Never!'. Whatever training, encouragement or self-denial is applied, the proposition is as impossible as that two parallel lines should ever meet."

True enough but this is how he appears in the comics apparently.

I'm not seeing to much a resemblance. Though overall I'm fairly apathetic about the movie anyways so this doesn't bother me but I can see the nerdy angle(not the supremacist one).

Idris Elba is so awesome that he traveled back into time and the Scandinavians made him an honorary viking.

    So all's well.
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...

Solid cast and direction; I'm hoping for the best.

In terms of really getting the story and characterization 'down'; the Thor and Cap movies imo will more difficult to pull of than the other Marvel flicks.

Edit: sorry bout the size of the pic, fellas

Idris Elba struck me as an odd pic; but I think he can pull it off. However, I am bias on the matter since he was one of my fav characters in the Wire.

They're probably going to lean this way in terms of appearance.

Thanks for the picture, explained greatly how I meant.

Another thing that bothers me, the armor of Odin and thor look far too modern...its as if they popped down to Midgard and went yo Stark make us some armor.

This sounds like a crappy movie to me, look at their outfits, why do comics and comic based movies have to destroy mythology (this movie) and history (300)

    Look at the synopsis:
The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.
He's not a mere warrior, he's the god of Thunder, Asgard is not a "fantastic realm" it's the fricking afterlife. Why would any norse god give a rat's ass about defending those who declared him and his kin weak and insignificant compared to some Jewish cult leader claiming to be the son of the Jewish god? Why would a Nordic god care about those who even deny his existence alltogether?

Shouldn't the movie deal with the fact that Christians, Jews and Musims claims woud be wrong regarding there being no other gods besides Jahweh (or Allah) and spark a strong revival of old religions like the Nordic ones? And a few religious wars here and there? And claims of Thor being Satan or one of his acomplices by Christians Jews and Muslims?

Uhhh what? It's based on the comic book's interpretation. What the hell is all of this "we're the only gods" ? Are you serious? Read the comics

Edit- Idris Elba is a horrible casting. Hopefully when the Luke Cage and Black Panther movies eventually come out, they are played by white actors.

Please, heimdall is not that important. Besides, they could make him half dark elf or something.

That isn't the point. THe point is that Heimdall is a Nord. So why in the hell do they go and get the complete opposite of it? If the character is white, I want him white. If he's black, I want him black. If this is based on acting skills, you're telling me there isn't a Nordic-looking actor to play as him well enough?

For some one claiming they're butchering the mythology, you do a great job yourself. Asgard is not the afterlife.

Also, based on comics, not on mythology.

Asgard is the home of the Gods, not the afterlife (thats Valhalla or Hel's realm depending)
