Roman leadership and Army compositions
The question is, when playing Romans, do you make house rules for your army composition and army command?
I for one am very motivated to house rule the composition of my armies based on the character's rank and unit ancillaries... and during my first run in EXRM I made it way to complicated:
- Tribunes may lead up to 5 allied units or 3 legion units on their own-> during crises this led to armies containing no fewer than 4 family members at times! all tribunes!
- Legates may lead a single legion (1 hastati, 1 principes, 1 triarii, 1 velites) on their own + 1 ala (5 units) if i include a tribune
- Praetors lead 1 legion and 1 ala on his own (crises added legates and tribunes, fiddly!)
- Consuls lead 2 legions and 2 alae.
This got way to fiddly and cumbersome after a while, so I quit it and read up on the "historical gameplay of the romans" guide.
New style:
- Tribunes are either a legion's cavalry unit or lead a small skirmish force as rebel hunters (1 hastati, 1 allied light infantry, 1 funditores, 1 italic skirmishers- I call this an "Ordo")
- legates command a single legion+ala (1 each of the roman infantry+ 4 allied infantry and a unit of allied cavalry OR a tribune).
- Praetors command a strengthened legion/ala, which basically is a legates force+Ordo
- Only consuls may lead full stacks.
In addition I decided to do the full cursus honorum for a limited number of FM's (4 or so- to eventually have 2 consuls and 2 praetors at a time). The family members I will run through the CH are first and foremost my faction heir/leader and the most talented military leaders that come into the family. I will strive to have other FM's complete 10 years of military service before they become governors. This will give me the opportunity to raise additional legions when the state gets in to deep, deep trouble.
ATM I'm at 271bc and found this attitude far easier to handle. Previously I was tempted to fill up the career counter for all starting FM's, now I only do the Faction heir (legion I, almost ready to become a praetor) and what new FM's come into the faction. Decius Mus (instant praetor if given command of an army) I keep for emergencies and my faction leader is atm the Praetor urbanus.
Does anyone else attempts to role-play the Cursus Honorum? My tip is to restrict it to a few FM's rather than all (i.e. do give all new FM's the 10 years, but only continue with the really good generals).
