    Default Revolt and Unrest

just bought the game last week, I've been playing a grand campaign as england for over 200 turns. i've taken over most of europe and started to move east when all of a sudden it seems like every original town i owned and some of the first few i took from france and the scots just got up and pissed all over the place. for the last 20 or so turns the fun has been sucked out of the game because 75% of resources and game time has been spent trying to settle these towns down. Every one of the towns has at least an abbey level church, a governor, is garrisoned with no less than 5 units of troops and has at least 2 priests each. yet everyones crapping their pants full of squaller and religious unrest. they keep revolting and i take it back and they get angry and revolt again. there are like 4 for so heretics running around that im trying to assassinate but i guess these guys are radioactive hulks because my assassins cant touch them. im really getting annoyed and almost deleted this campaign to start another one. its annoying and not fun.

tl;dr : squaller, religious unrest => revolts, wat do?

Religious unrest- Assassins and stacks of priests to take'em down.
Squalor- Well no real solution but to empty the city, it revolts and then you conquer it again and exterminate the populace to settle the squalor thing.

Where is your capital currently located? If it is on the far side of your kingdom, try to move it back to someplace more central. The further away the capital is from the settlement in question, public order will be reduced, up to a cap of -80% on that factor alone.

    Another possibility is being excommunicated.

Some factors that might affect it. Your current faction leader might have horrible negative traits giving him a low authority level. If he has anything less than 3 points in authority you might want to consider sending him on a suicide mission into a wall of spears.

Do you have taxes on low, or very high? I cant imagine you would still have unrest issues with low taxes.

Do you have the fully upgraded city hall/mayors palaces built? Abbeys are not the best building from the point of view of maintaining settlement harmony. The city hall line gives a much better boost, as well as incidentally improving your merchants. You can also build the full brothel/inn line, though I personally dont do that in any settlement where I have generals, since it tends to ruin them in the long term.

Prettty much what Avatar said, build and upgrade Town halls and lower tax levels (I assume you have toggled the "manage all cities" before you started the campaign?) Recruit extra troops in the settlements to stave off rebellion until the buildings are completed.
Send your priests out into regions with religious unrest to preach, send priests or assasins to get rid of the Heretics, send your faction leader on a crusade (or a suicide mission) and build churches to improve relations with the pope (as well as public order) You can also improve Papal relations with a big cash donation.

If there is still rebellion in the settlements after taking those actions, do what Ishan said - send the army out of the city and do everything to provoke revolt, then reconquer the settlement and Exterminate the population.

When a city goes red, the first thing I look for is the location. If its at the borders with lotsa garrison chances are another faction has planted a spy in it. Recruit a spy or two and have a general garrison with several troops to dig them out. Prepare a few assassins beside the city to take down the spies.

Religious unrest is common in islamic and orthodox areas. Building a small church and start recruiting priests are my top priority. Good thing about some islamic faction, their cities have racing tracks to help keep unrest in check.

Squalor, as ishan said, has no real solution. But I noticed if you have been building the buildings that contribute to order, they will keep unrest under control. Inns, taverns etc provide some of the highest order early on. Of course if everything else failed, just let it revolt and exterminate the population, but I rarely go to such extend.
