Default How long do armies go unpaid before deserting?

Hi I am currently playing in M2TW Hotseat here on TWC, I have blockaded my enemies ports, My assassins have destroyed his ability to recruit troops and are now targeting his economic buildings, I know he must be bankrupt as he hasn't been able to repair any buildings for 5 turns,
my question then is how long can he be bankrupt before his troops rebel or desert, is it a time period or a certain amount of debt?
I have never come across anything like this situation in a single player campaign and if anybody can shed some light on this I'll instantly rep them

I never encountered deserting because of no funds.

He will continue going deeper into the red, that's all AFAIK.

In M2TW troops don't desert because of lack of money. That feature was introduced in ETW/NTW. Being in the red stops your opponent from building anything, training troops and retraining them.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

I've always wanted to do something like that- drain my enemy's funds until they start throwing peasant armies at me. Will the AI in M2 actually do that to you, or will they wait unil they get enough money for decent units?

They usually just wait until they have the funds for real troops, rather than going back to something weaker.
However, I suppose that if you wait long enough they´ll eventually give in and start recruiting whatever they can afford.
They still won´t disband, however, but are more likely to mix in the weak troops with whatever professional soliders they have left.

Too bad, that would be fun.

I never tried drying the whole treasury of the AI, but nevertheless, I encounter cr.p town militia and peasant crossbows even late game.

    So have I

I found it disappointing when playing as France , and the HRE started strong in their war against me, but after I conquered half of their cities, they only had militia armies - I was wishing that they would have started producing more advanced armies, by building more advanced buildings by that time in the game.

I was playing on M/M in that game. I will try harder campaign difficulty levels, in case that helps my rivals to produce more advanced units, especially in the later parts of the game.

While the benefit to doing that is greater in ETW and NTW (because unpaid troops desert in those games), there are still some benefits to doing that in earlier games, such as M2TW. For example, once you actually battle that faction's troops, they will become weaker and weaker with every battle, because they won't be able to replenish their lost troops... and of course can't increase their army size. (And if you maintain your own economy, then you can replenish any troops you lose, and perhaps even increase your army size on top of that.)

I reckon I'll try that sometime - even just to make that faction my vassal, rather than destroy them completely.
