I was under the impression they were massively error prone.
Do they really enhance the game that much?

Mon the Scots
God YES.
And no most of them are Glitch free after a year.
No everyone starting with vanila and many still play vanila along with mods (like me)
Yes you may want to have some mods dude! Some good mods give you another interesting experience.
Note that RTW and MIITW have more players than their descendant. Part of it is because 2 of them easy to mod
First things first in my book: Two tweaks worth considering as they seek to address gameplay gaffs, howlers, and other annoyances in the regular game rather than 'traditional style mods' which trash the game with Daleks, elves, dwarves, and other nonsense:
1) Player1 Bugfixer: sorts out the tech tree howlers, gets to grips with the gaffs, leaves the regular game 99% intact and is a fine piece of work![]()
2) Ruprecht Anti-Squalor: reduces the overdone squalor/rioting nonsense by improving public order bonuses etc and is another fine piece of work
I prefer to call it the regular or standard game as I regard 'vanilla' as a silly word, and insulting and condescending of the 99% of players in the real world who have zero interest in playing modded games.
It probably pees CA off too seeing their so-called fans trashing their games by slagging them off as 'vanilla'
vanila means original unmodified game
I was playing vanila for almost three years before I first start a MOD, but from that time I have never played vanila again
You should surely try some
Mr Whippy!
Can someone please give me the run down on how to install 'Stainless Steel' on a Steam version of Medieval 2? I too have never used a mod, and am looking for a more intelligent type of Medieval 2.

Well some might cause CTD but not very often. Depends more on your PC than the mod itself. Atleast for the more polished and finished ones.
When you love the roman era then yes, they will enhance the game and will give you a nearly whole new experience. But some hardcoded gameplay elements can not be changed (like random rebell spawning, sucking diplomacy).
p.s. and when you prefer modern history and gunpowder then you should go with Empire obviously.
tbf, vanilla icecream is not bad
