Default RTW randomly stops working in the middle of a battle

I just started a Roman campaign, and in the first battle against Hannibal, things were going fine. I deployed my troops, did some skirmishing. Then I tried to zoom in to Hannibal's Celtic heavy infantry, and my computer brings me back to my desktop, and I get the following error message:

Rome: Total War has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

    I am not using Steam

    Windows Vista

    Manufacturer: Dell
    Model: Inspiron 9400
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T500 @1.60GHz 1.60 GHz
    Memory (RAM): 2038 MB
    System Type: 32-bit Operating System

    Try lowering your graphic settings.

All of my in-game graphics options for the battle map are at their lowest. Unit scale is set to Large. Idk what else I can do to lower the graphics settings

    I've done this as well

EDIT: I know this is a stupid question, but I have not seen this term before. Does CTD stand for Crash-to-Desktop?

Yes, a CTD does stand for a Crash To Desktop.

I've got a Inspiron 9400 laptop as well, but I don't use it for RSII. Mine comes with a graphics card - does the one you have use on-board graphics or does it have a dedicated card?

What operating system are you using? XP, Vista or 7?

You can try to play the game at a lower resolution - that is changed through the Options menu.

I am running a Windows Vista, and I am playing on the lowest Battle Map resolution.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'on-board graphics' or a 'dedicated card' but this is what I DO know.
I typed in dxdiag into Run, and opened up my display settings, and here is what I found:

Name: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family
    Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
    Chip Type: Intel(R) GMA 950
    DAC Type: Internal
    Approx. Total Memory: 224 MB
    Current Display Mode: 1024x768 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor (I'm using an external monitor, because my laptop screen is cracked)

    Drivers

    Main Driver: igdumd32.dll
    Version: 7.14.0010.1114 (English)
    Date: 11/15/2006 2:07:56 PM

    WHQL Logo'd: Yes
    DDI Version:9Ex

Also, would this guide be of any help to me?

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=390381

I followed all of the steps, but when I go to save the changes to my RomeTW-BI.exe I get the following message: Cannot save file

I could restart my campaign on the BI engine. What's the difference between RTW and BI engine exactly?

EDIT: Just read that CFF Explorer won't work on 32-bit OS. Going to try the guide for 32-bit OS

EDIT: Applied the changes mentioned in this guide

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=390476

for 32-bit OS Vista, but I still get a CTD in the battle against Hannibal when I zoom in close to enemy units

EDIT: I've tried using the ReadyBoost feature for Vista on a 8GB USB drive, but it still crashes. Does this suggest that I am not having a RAM or Virtual Memory issue?
