An amazing documentary done by the BBC on the possibility of a Nuclear Holocaust. When it was made, it was originally censored for release to the British public out of fear of negative affect on public morale.

Watch all the way through. The credits chilled me to the bone.

Interesting. Right up this alley is this pseudo documentary which builds a speculative scenario around what if the fall of the Soviet Union would not have been peaceful aka the Soviet Leadership around Gorbatchev hade been successfully replaced by hardliners via a coup (not quite unreal given there was a bloody coup where luckily none wanted to go all out).

It uses tons of authentic material of the time aka speeches of political leaders and news footage intermingled with montaged footage of the fictional Soviet Union hardliner who took over. It's also loosely based on the contingency plans of NATO and the Warsaw Pact in case of escalation.

as one might guess this doesn't end well.

"Sebaceans once had a god called Djancaz-Bru. Six worlds prayed to her. They built her temples, conquered planets. And yet one day she rose up and destroyed all six worlds. And when the last warrior was dying, he said, 'We gave you everything, why did you destroy us?' And she looked down upon him and she whispered, 'Because I can.' "
