Default Byzantine late units on early game start?

I have been playing Stainless Steel 6.3 as the Byzantine empire and noticed all of the High power late professional units that I start out with. I started a couple other factions to see what they start out with and noticed they all start with only early period units. This seems unbalanced. Can anyone help me to understand this? Is it a mistake or a default in my installation? Is there anyway to fix this?

Not having tried this myself im assuming its because the byzantines are an empire that has gradually shrunk from the eastern roman empire. So most of the units will have a greater level of technology than the "barbarians" from elsewhere but as it declines falls into disrepair.

Cool thanks, that makes sense to me.

It's to give them a fighting chance against Hungary and Ottomans wanting their lands. And if a Jihad gets called against Constantinople then Byzantines will be near dead by the time that's over

OK, so it is balanced then, I guess I better get ready for a Jihad then.

The Romans (aka Byzantines) start with a unit of Varangian Guard, Scholarii, Siphonatores and Spatharii because historically those units did exist at the time. As Mattgoby said, the Romans had a long military tradition by this time so they had one of the best organised and equipped armies of the period. However for balance reasons, you can only retrain those units you start with until the Fourth Laternan Council event (1224). After that you can recruit more albeit in limited numbers.

I've always wondered when I can start training those units in my campaign, thanks

    For information only...
Early or late era reqruitment is just how the vanilla game is seting up the unit reqruitment.
For example. In west europe coexist peseants and knight the same time.
That is a mod is ussually trying to show.
    For example.
Compare the european armies of 11th and early 12th century with this.
These guys existed in this form from 880ad!!
And they were only the provincial ("cheap") units!!!
TGC in order to continue its development seak one or more desicated scripters to put our campaign scripts mess to an order plus to create new events and create the finall missing factions recruitment system. In return TGC will give permision to those that will help to use its material stepe by step. The result will be a fully released TGC plus many mods that will benefit TGC's material.
Despite the mod is dead does not mean that anyone can use its material
    read this to avoid misunderstandings.

IWTE tool master and world txt one like this, needed inorder to release TGC 1.0 official to help TWC to survive.
Adding MARKA HORSES in your mod and create new varietions of them. Tutorial RESTORED.

And you better recruit them once available...because Mongols are coming.
(well, in my game they got owned by Jerusalem...)

To add a little to what's been said above, 'Late Professional' refers to a method or type of recruitment, retention and training, rather than those are Late Era units.

And all the best units of Byzantium will have huge problems in 1350 and later. So if they rule at begining, to the end, they have problems. Best thing for greek empire is their extraordinary economics and defence skill.

Ussualy i play few games after 1350-1400. Very few. Only HRE, Teutons, Aragon and France push me there. Especially in late campaign. These 4 factions shine only after new era event. But I love early era.
When I got 20-30 provinces I got tired and I start new one.

just wonder...what's the Romans problem in late game?
I am right now in 1250, want to know ahead so have time to prepare.

Ligiahua, if you play them in 6.3 and expand in east, are minor problems because turks are killed fast and only barrier are the mongols. In west the new era will give you headache.

They lose the unit advantage and more and more end up at a (unit) disadvantage.
