What do you think? Is it ok to bribe opposition armies and their generals if you have the money?
In some sense it's realistic to a degree in that armies crossed from side to side, however, I think it was generally rare. In my current campaign as Lithuania, I'd probably have lost a number of cities/castles defending against more than 10 stacks of Byzantium forces (fighting them on two fronts - modern day Ukraine and the Caucasus, but by bribing their forces, I was able to limit the damage and only lost one castle temporarily. I'm able to bribe, because I get close to 100,000 coins every turn after having built a nice empire spanning the area of what was the Soviet Union.
