    Default Peasants?

Wondering whether, people would like peasants to stay the way they are.
Or be replaced by a militia type unit.

Its seems that a couple of unit spaces are used by this useless unit when it could be used by a more useful one.

If you have suggestions for a new unit instead please say.
Here are the peasant units at the moment that could be replaced:
    NE peasant
    SE peasant
    EE peasant
    ME peasant
(I think that's right, but I may be wrong.)

Get rid of them! Historically inaccurate, at least in terms of having an organized unit of pitchfork wielding serfs...such men only fought in the most desperate situations. Now, as to having a militia unit replace them, I just go with the Town Militia of most factions. But you're more than welcome to create something else entirely. i.e., polearm peasant like from SS 6.3, or like Transylvanian Peasants, or surprise us! haha

And btw, this might hep give you an idea of what the community feels: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=381662

So the majority is against , I might work on something then. The Polarm Peasant is a good idea for the europeans if anyone has any suggestion I am willing to listen.

The lower cast of warriors (excluding slaves and such) include:

Militia from city borders or citys used to be in harms way: These are experienced, better armoured and used to take a beating by the enemy.

Peasants from the hinterland or country side: These are not so experienced as border city militias, but are the ones called into drafts when it's a neccessity for war.

There is a decent univercal city mlitia allready, but the melee peasant is seriously lacking in more ways then one.

My first suggestion (if they are using a 2 handed staff+somthing -weapons) that they're using it as a halberd, and not as a spear like they do now. This gives more individual freedom, and less diciplined wierdness when not in possession of a shield.

Secondly, would be to go for diffrent looking types of weapons. Lets say you go for pole weapons and weapons in their trade: peasant billhook, early voulge, clubs, and all the other kinds listed here, (but make sure it's as primitive as possible). IIRC, 3 diffrent looking weapons of the same type is possible in M2TW, if you have played with this unit

...then you know what I mean when I say "look diffrent". Even 3 more if you upgrade their arms.

Third. If your going to make them even more capable, then perhaps giving them acouple of poor javelins to throw (think about the portogues/lithuanian javelin throwers already ingame).

The last thing to mention would be to give them a grayish/brown color, with no affiliation to any nationality/culture. Perhaps 1 for levant and 1 for Europe if you have too.

(think of those religious units with 2-handed clubs)

That is all I can think of

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

Might we create some Rural version to the Urban Milita? Then the ol' Urban Militia guys might gain a bonus fighting in a settlement (and penalty if caught short in the countryside). Equally, the Rural Militia would get a bonus fighting in the country (also some skill in being hard to see in grass, etc) but of course they'd get a penalty fighting in settlements.

    Just a thought.

these are great ideas, I might make a unit like 'rural militia'. Primitive weapons as described by Sivilombudsmannen along with no uniform. That would hopefully add diversity

Being rural guys fighting in their countryside, might be fun givng them 'hide in long grass' ability. So they can at least be used for surprise attacks upon an advancing enemy. Then their weak attack might then count for something.

    Just a thot.

honestly i don't see the reason for having rural militia other than the authenticity of it. if a unit can fight in a city which is one the hardest types of warfare, it can fight out in a open area where communication is simple and you don't have to worry about enemies around every corner. then again the whole thing could be condensed to one unit simply callled "Militia" and could have both those abilities mentioned above.

For gameplay sake, I would like to see peasants removed and replaced with basic spear militia. Uber history buffs please dont burn me on this, but I would imagine they would have carried crude spears, cudgels, and probably some sort of shield. Obviously it would not be a homogenous mix but..... Id like to see them removed and replaced with faction/area specific units.

If you take a look at Europa's EDU you'll see I removed peasants and consolidated the many types of artillery into generic units where applicable. Frees up quite a few slots which I then proceeded to utilise by placing more mercenaries into the game.

But remember you'll have to work on the models_db as well to add new units and that sucker is not for the faint hearted
