Suddenly Cannot Save in Rome Campaign

I'm having a strange anomaly. I didn't post this in the technical help forum as I'm not entirely certain it's mod related. I've not seen anything like this before. Here's the problem:

1. I start a new campaign in Rome, BI-exe. Settings are Hard/Hard. I start the script, finish my first turn, go to save the game, and both "Save Game" and "Load Game" are grayed out.

2. I launch RSII, load a PREVIOUS save (I have over twenty in my save folder). Go to save it - save and load game both work.

3. If I launch RSII, load a save game, exit the save game, THEN start a new game, I can save that game.

This is really bizarre. The only way I can save a game (or load one) is to load one my existing saved games first. Any idea why?

I have had this problem and I don't know the cause, but I have had it solved by deleting excess save files. I had perhaps 20 or more save files and when I slimmed it down it was better.

I wish I knew more to help

I have had this problem a few times (it was a while ago so I don't remember the particulars) but, like in vinnyvedivic's case, it was fixed by deleting excess saves. Course, I didn't realize that until after I had uninstalled/reinstalled everything...

Well, I've had more than 30 files in my save directory before, but tried your advice and moved all my saves into backup directory, completely emptying my saves folder. When I start the game, the Continue Campaign is greyed-out, as it should be.

Unfortunately, it still doesn't work and the only way I can save or load is to put a save file in the save directory.

Tried deleting the map.rwm file, too (I know, a long-shot). No change.

Wow, I really don't want to reinstall ...

sorry to jump in here again but sort of relative to this topic...I have had problems where my last save would CTD and as a result I had to use the save previous. I then deleted some extra saves and the problem went away.

try this and I know it seems silly, but email yourself the saves and then delete them from your computer, then start the game. If that does nothing you can always take them back from the email and put them back in I wish I could provide better help I feel like a middle age doctor prescribing leaches

Well, it didn't seem silly, but it didn't work. I still appreciate your help and + rep for trying.

The strange thing is - it seems like I've read about this before, but no searches on this forum pull up anything.

I had this problem the other day, simply delete your preferences folder in your main RTW folder AND in the campaign folder of whatever campaign you're playing. In my case it was the One_Turn_ something or other, you get the picture. This won't hurt anything and will simply reset your video/sounds settings in game which you can repair quickly.
