Battle resolution under 800x600?

Hello,
as my pc is slow l wonder if its possible to play the battles in 640x480 (almost every game at that time had that option). I know it will conflict with the battle ui, but still i want to ask. I tried to edit the preferences.txt, but every time l start the game, it reverts back in 800x600. I prefer lower res, than lower quality settings. (In my case l want more units and smoother gameplay).

Are you sure you edited the right preferences.txt? There is one for each faction folder.

If you didn't manage to do it through it though, I don't think that's possible.

Hmm.... I changed it manually in the preferences.txt and the battle appears in 640x480 (considerable worst text) and slight fps boost, however the game shows me that I'm playing in 800x600. Every time the game changes the preferences.txt to 800x600, so every time l have to change it manually.
I play always as Rome, so I change only the Rome folder.

Try making the preferences.txt file that you've changed 'read-only'. That may prevent it being changed (if it is).

I tried even on 320x240 and it works. But not to mention the quality
