I've learnt my lesson after gifting Acre to the pope. Whilst I was the first to reach there on a Crusade I had no intention of holding it considering my soldiers were depleted, it was a monetary drain and the Egyptians where gearing up for a Jihad.

Gifted to the Papal Sates.

50 Turns later the levant belongs to the Papal states and he is at war with Byzantium and the Mongols and winning!

And he sat a full stack at the border to Libya daring me to attack him.

This happened on a later game I did where to test it out, I gifted Ireland to him as England. He seemed to leave me alone but then conquered Portugal and the Danes

Anyone else found that giving the Pope a territory gives him an insatiable taste for expansion?

The campaign I am on now is weirder however. No one has gifted him any territories he's jsut decided to up and conquer a small part of Spain.

Though he is an ex cardinal of mine so maybe he learnt Imperialistic ideals from me

Nope. As France I basically walled myself off from the rest of Europe by giving him a bunch of land and he simply stayed that way, not conquering anything

I once gave him Cairo and Alexandria after Crusading there and he got powned by Egypt.

The Pope is wayyy more powerful than he should be. I removed their access to crossbows, tried to give them a less aggressive personality, and cut back on their King's Purse, and they still conquer Africa and Corsica every time.

I once gave them some middle eastern settlements when I played Spain because I didn't want an empire that far flung. I didn't really notice whether they took over the Egyptians and Turks or not. I was happy on the far west.

most of the Time Papal States remain calm, but as long as you give them some territory becomes a menace.
I gave The Pope Damasco, to increase my ++++ levels. and it worked

but 50 years later, he almost had all holy land leaving only Acre to me,
the worst it that I was targeted by Mongols and they leave him alone

Strange, this never happened to me at any campaing. I usually give him Jerusalen, witch he usually loss to rebels.. The only time I gave him the north of the levant (north of acre) he just lost it to the Turks..

I never had that problem when I played England and gave the pope Inverness, I guess he must only expand when a faction he doesnt like is nearby.

I was playing as Spain and I conquered Acre, Jerusalem and so on. I decided to give the land to the Pope. He was really annoyed when I did this and then lost the hole Holy Land to the Mongols.

I´ve seen the Pope do some "mad-with-power"-phases in a few of my campaigns.
He mostly stays still in his little city, but does sometimes get crazy and goes bananas on the northern part of the Appenine peninsula and the Alps.
However, I never give him any regions, so he usually stays pacified.
