Is it possible to decrease the chance of being excommunicated when attacking the pope?
Just like the elephant animation, this Carthage scenario is actually in the game, it just has a small percantage factor for showing up, that's all..."we're way way pre-alpha and what that means is there is loads of features not just in terms of the graphics but also in terms of the combat and animations that actually aren't in the game yet.So the final game is actually gonna look way way better than this!” - James Russell, CA

Well i used to assassinate him. Then send a army over and take rome. But then every1 wants to attack me
its not because i want to kill the pope or take his lands.

Is it possible to script an excommunicated faction to be reconciled by the pope the next turn?

There are only scripting commands to check for excommunicated faction, no commands to do so. There could be a vague chance of excommunication if the initial stance in the descr_strat is war with the pope (catholic factions only obviously). Otherwise some weird scripting through factions_standing (faint chance) or descr_missions in connection with the script (vague).
Check descr_faction_standings, Trigger 0039_P_War_Declared would be the obvious one to begin with followed by any others that result in a -0.1 or greater for the papal faction. I'm guessing any thing that puts you below 0 results in excommunication.
