    Default I need help

Hey everyone so i let me explain my current situation with this game... After many mods such as stainless steel and the sicilian vespers and the kingdoms grand campaign mod i started to get frustrated due to the relative sameness and "vanilla" look and feeling of those mods. So i decided i would give this game one more shot when i downloaded deus lo vult. So i started it up and clicked my favorite faction, Milan. What astounded me was the great look and medeival look and feel of the game. I instantly fell in love. Well lets get to the point. at around turn 30 i was doing fine i was slowly gaining a relitively large money depot and has around 20k and lovin it. Well at around turn 45 it starts to hit the fan. Germany declares war on me and take venice from me. I am doing fine except for the fact that their armies outnumber me like 4 to 1 which i loved cause i actually felt like i was losing. Anyway then france my good ally turns on me and i realize i am fighting a two front war. I slowly lose Genoa then Florence then after an epic siege battle Milan also falls. So i have never lost a campaign before and i was a tad shocked. I am going to start up another campaign soon but i have a few questions. Oh and btw i was playing with everything turned on.

    1. how does one make a general into a fighting general cause all i had were career governors?
    2. could someone explain what government points and military points actually mean and do?
    3. why was it that i was way outnumbered?
    4. how come the mongols didnt do anything(they just sat in their one province)?
    5. is there any way to secure a legit alliance?

P.S. sorry for the long thread but i am just really enthusiastic about this mod.

Hi, I am also new to this mod and starting my first campaign with it. I have found the answer to some of your questions in the Stategy Guide for New Players. If you haven't already checked it out, you can find that link in the sticky posts at the top of this forums page. I find that I am spending more time reading the guides and manuals for the mod and sub-mod BB2.8 than I am playing the game so far (and that is a good thing), there is just so much information on the new features.

    Hail iamsawyer!

    1. When a family member first comes of age, you need to 'educate' him over the course of 3-4 years. If you put him in a castle settlement with a garrison quarters-level barracks or above, he will learn the skills he will need as a general in the field, and as an administrator of military infrastructure (i.e., castles). Let him earn the various traits, and spend his last year in the field learning the craft, and you will have a decent general who has gained some good command and leadership traits.

    2. Never use them myself, so best to look in the various guides. Otherwise I might confuse you even more! haha

    3. Could be several reasons: not aggressive enough, not working to expand/fortify your possessions, or maybe the gov/mil points prevented you from upgrading your facilities fast enough to keep up. Not to mention HRE simply has so many settlements that they are able to mass produce lots of troops....but are usually distracted by all their neighboring factions. You were unlucky...try harder.

    4. The Mongols just sit there on the steppes...until they get massive reinforcements sometime in the 1200s. As in several huge, veteran stacks that portray the Mongol invasion. You'll get warnings and pop-ups that tell you about it. As Milan, not a big concern for decades....but if you play as any eastern faction, its always a good idea to take those warnings seriously.

    5. For maintaining strong alliances, DLV is the same as any other mod: money, and lots of it. Pay tribute to your allies, even just 500-1000 florins every few turns to keep your faction in their good graces. Especially the Pope, I usually give him 1000 florins every few turns to keep my rep with him high, and same with any big neighbors. Allies on the other side of a rival should also be paid regularly to facilitate them helping you out in the event of war.

    Good luck!

And don't activate the total war script. In normal DLV alliances need to be unmade by a dipplomate to allow you to attack, or be attacked by your ex-allies.

+ My personal choice is usually to decline: Point System, Total War, Character Based Recruitment and Recruitment Limitation.

    3. why was it that i was way outnumbered?
Well, you got your ass handed to you on a platter. 3 words for you son: economics, economics, economics.

    - Early on(turn 1), take out key targets with your present army, like a rebel stack in your capital, a crucial fort or a lucrative city.
    - By this time you may end up in red, so disband all medium troops. Place your best professional units in forts and militias in city's, etc. for free upkeep. Your going to need all the money.
    - From turn 2 til about 30/40 you should focus on building the best economic buildings (ports, roads, mines, even farms). This will enable you to maintain at least 1 standing army by the time the other factions begins to actively walk the realm (turn 30-40).
    - By this time, you're loose to wonder about as you please.

    5. is there any way to secure a legit alliance?
Well, that's not very Total War-ish of you is it. But there are ways to do so successfully

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

Regardless of Total war script or not there is a time of "calamities" that makes everyone in a state of war. All you need to do is survive it for a few turns. Then the calamities would end and you should see some of your enemies cease firing.
