I've heard dozens of people complaining about the issue, including myself. Turning down the eyecandy isn't a viable option if you have a good PC. I can see why you don't want to play on crappy graphic settings.
As far as I see it it's nothing more than a game bug. One that can be very random.

This is the kind of stuff that drives some people to consoles!

However, be glad we have the internet (along with TWC and irishron), as getting answers now is much easier than back in the BBS days of slow dialup modems and DOS. I would be willing to bet that the vast majority never even check to see if their motherboard has the latest chipset drivers. I had a desktop that was crashing often, even when not being used, and that cleared up that particular problem for me.
