Default House Rules & shieldwalls - a question

ok, so I have a slight history of not using 2-rank deep shieldwalls I just think they look silly and, more importantly, they spread my front out far too much if I have 4-5 Hastati, doesn't suit my style at all.

But, can I use the following formation for the shieldwall Hastati (all 2 ranks) and still be historically accurate:

    .....HHHHHH...HHHHHH...HHHHHH
    ...........HHHHHH....HHHHHH
: - It's my smilie and I'll use it if I want to......

I don't see why not, but why would I? I think you could, ask Lt.

The Romans fought a certain way, and if ones wants to recreate that then they are playing SPQR the way I like to play, if not fine, but its not the way I play. lol Romans fought in a loose formation compared to the greeks, as seen by even CA making their historical 1 yard square battle zone. But there were times when the romans need close tactics, it just was used mainly for defense and was done in order to spread the line or reinforce it. I just feel the AI isnt that much of a challenge to try to find easy ways yo exploit it, after all it likes to build armies of 1st cohorts, so what does that tell you. lol

Its all up to how you like to play, I just dont like Bragging when cheap tactics are used. Thats like saying I one 50 battles with my Praetorians. lol Just doesnt mean as much as using real tactics with historically composed Legions. Just my opinion. ;-)

ok, so, you advocate going for a single line of Hastati?

Just want to get it right for the next walkthrough I'm gonna do.

What I do is place the 4-5 Hastatii in a 2 rank shield wall to hold the line from the barbarian attack works well really. Then Keep Principes in the rear and then triarii in Reserve. Archer near triarii if I have them and Velites behind or infront of hastatii depending if defensive or attack on skirmishing. Cavalry on the flanks. General in the middle as the AI tends to attack in his direction.
