Default Needing help finding Pre, during & Post Roman Republic army books

    Hi all,

I'm trying to find books that describe the military system of the Romans before, during and after the Republic.

Adrian Goldsworthy's name keeps popping up as the "go to" person, but his "The complete roman army" is a panaroma of the roman military machine. I do know that he wrote "Roman army at war" for Cambridge University press but that's just one 300 page book about a 200 yr. time period!

Any hints on how to approach this military history endeavor of mine without spending a fortune?

It seems that books on the Byzantine empire's army exist in a fairly large amount but the roman army material on military tactics & strategy, siegeworks and command/structure, etc. are scanty!

    Any help would be appreciated,

P.S. Pen & Sword publishers from England have very nicely done books but they don't have this kind of info. Maybe I'm looking at less than academic sources for academic subjects...

University libraries - even if you can't check out stuff you can typically use there materials on site and access there electronic resources.

    Hi all,

    THANK YOU! for responding.

Military tactics & strategy of the Roman and Byzantine time periods seem very sophisticated.

Being Greek, you can understand my perspective with Alexander the Great & the Byzantine Empire as well.

    Thanks again,
