OK, few questions.
1. I want to start a Western Roman Empire campaign, should i play on Vanilla BI or a mod?
2. If a mod, what mods have a fun and challenging Western Roman Empire?
3. Does the BI campaign not work on Rome Total Realism Platinum Edition?

Vanilla BI gives you a tough challenge when playing as WRE so I think you should try out that

1: it is always better with a mod.
2:INVASIO BARBARORVM is a good mod for it, although I do not know which IB is the right one for BI.

Yes I would Reccomend INVASIO BARBARORVM or FALL OF ROME. (For INVASIO BARBARORVM) SOMNIVM APOSTATE IVLIANI is closest to the Vanilla start date. otherwise RVINA ROMAE is the Original and FLAGELLVM DEI is for the Fall of Rome after 463

Start with Vanilla BI to give you an idea of what to do, how to manage, how to be victorious etc.

Don't know, never played a BI modification with the exception of playing as Romano-British, ERER and the Slavs
3. Does the BI campaign not work on Rome Total Realism Platinum Edition?

It never worked on my computer tough some people claim it works on BI.
