Default New Symbols of the ERE?

I have been looking through the Notitia and I've noticed - The Cheetah, the Lioness/Lion, and the Jackal all make common appearances in the ERE army's shield designs. It makes me wonder - were these imperial symbols?

Known shield designs - BTW when I say head it includes thier front legs and chest
    Hiberii (Cheetah)
Visi (two Lion or Jackal heads)
    Prima Theodosiani (Jackal)
    Thraces (Lion)
    Tervingi (Two Lion Heads)
Secunda Theodosiani (Possibly a Lion or Jackal)
Sagittarii Seniores Oriantales (Two Jackal or Cheetah Heads)
    Menapii (Jackal)
    Tertiodecimanii (Jackal)
    Valentinianenses (2 Jackal Heads)
    Pelantes Iuniores (Jackal)

And there is a shield design in the WRE with a cheetah belonging to the Legiones Prima Flavia

    Your Interpretations?

I'm not sure if some of those head are in fact human heads. Head hunting was still being practiced by some tribes, and the shield design may have been used as a weapon of terror in its own right, by displaying a picture of a severed head implying that the shield bearer was a head hunter?

Interesting but these seem to be shields for entire units not just one person although there are variations of the same design that would appear so that is an interesting prospect valentinian

It may interest members to know that Otto Seeck's edition of the Notitia Dignitatum (originally published in 1876 and reprinted in 1962) is available as a print-on-demand book published by Nabu Press. I have no idea of the quality but the publishers claim that it is not produced by OCR scanning, so there should not be the problems associated with that method. Comparative prices can be obtained on one of my favourite sites (http://www.usedbooksearch.co.uk).

It might be an idea to also purchase a copy of the Bodleian library version as there are differences between the two that need to be taken into account.

I am open to correction but I do not believe that it is possible to buy a copy of the Bodleian Notitia as such. Of course, the shield patterns and military insignia can be viewed on the site mentioned in MMFA's first post on this thread. The Bodleian Library used to sell a filmstrip containing the illustrations from the Notitia Dignitatum and De Rebus Bellicis, and perhaps it still does. It does publish a catalogue of the filmstrips that it has available but, unfortunately, its contents are not included on its website. Short of visiting Oxford, I assume that one is expected to buy the catalogue online and then to order what one wants from that.

I think we are both correct Renatus.

From memory I think you can have those filmstrips printed by the library and bound, at a rather expensive premium of course!

The cheapest way is to buy the filmstrips and have a decent photographer print them on high quality paper for you.

At risk of being accused of necroposting, I thought that the following would be of interest to members.

The Bodleian Library filmstrip referred to by VV and me is numbered 159B and the images on it can be viewed here. Be patient; the site can be rather slow.

What the Clibanari rider in 15th century Milanese full plate from a copy of the De rebus bellicis by the looks of it ? That's why I take the illustrations of the ND with a grain of salt, the different versions show varying shield pattens!
