Default I've never actually beat a game of vanilla RTW. Should I?

I've had this game forever, played it and Medieval and Empire to death (along with a number of mods) intermittently over the years.

But I just realized that I've never beaten the Vanilla RTW Roman campaign. I've made it to the reforms like once. That whole thing about competing with the other romans, fighting each other, dominating the senate- totally missed it. It always sounded like fun, though.

I guess what I'm asking is, should I try it once? Or just stick to mods?

I think the whole point of the game is that you have fun playing it.

Some will say you have to complete the campaign others will say you don't need to because it's getting
boring others will tell you to go to multiplayer and some will say stick to mods and forget vanilla.

At the end all depends on how you like to play it yourself so best is to try out each aspect of the game and
decide on your own what you like most since everything else is only personal opinion of others.

You may as well, because you can finish the campaign off in about 7 hours (m/m) as one of the roman factions if you play aggressively. After the twenty turns, you do not have to even fight many of your battles if you do not want to, as the auto calc. ridiculously favours the Romans.

Eh, it's up to you. After you're in control of Rome, you pretty much won the game. On my Brutii campaign, on H battles and VH campaign, by the time I took Rome, i had legions across the map, and was on the verge of beating every faction still alive. All this done in about 40-50 years - nowhere close to the marius reforms.

try it, you gotta win at least once, the main campaign as a Roman faction!
Brutii and Scipii are definitely easier for a more "dominating" type of victory on VH/VH. I mean, keep in mind that even the long campaign is pretty easy to win, just conquer first barbarian and other enemy territories, when you are near the victory limit, then mount a strike at Rome itself with an elite army with heavy onagers nearby if the enemy doesn't fight on the field. Once you control the city, and control the required number of provinces, you simply win, you don't even have to wipe out the other Roman factions.

IMO if you go for a total world conquest, take either Brutii or Scipii, because as Scipii you can get gold/gold troops, and with Brutii you can get 3 bronze chevron troops I believe. IMO its more tedious to hunt the far flung African territories filled with full stacks of an A.I. Scipii, than simply play as Scipii, dominate Greece, Asia Minor, the middle east and Africa and only then turn on the wretched Brutii and Julii.

Lol in my Scipii game, I managed to deny all but Thermon, Apollonia, Illyria, and one Dacian province to the Brutii. I lost Caralis to Julii. So I had all the best land really, so it really didn't matter that much.

Alright, well, you've all convinced me.

I think I'm gonna go with Darthmod though, instead of straight up vanilla, just because I've always found it a far more fulfilling experience. The main game is intact, though.

Now, who to choose? I almost always go Julii, just because I love the red romans and fighting the barbarians feels more...'right?' I might do Scipii for the pure nostalgia- my very first RTW game, one of the few I've lost, was as Scipii. Never played as Brutii, I never cared much for the green...

    Decisions, decisions.

Kicking the hell outta barbarians in red (Julii) never gets old for me. It is quite annoying though when Germania Brittania and the Gauls all team up on you.

This, so much. I have such a hard time mustering up the will to play as any of the other factions. Killing the barbarians just feels...right.

I've only ever beat the short campaign and I dont 'think I've ever finished a modded campaign, though I play them a lot more than vanilla.

I don't think you should. It'd be a waste of time just try mod and complete that, their more fun.
