    Simply, my strategy only works for Greek Minor Cities. The arrows mean that one hoplite points to that direction in case of flankers on my line.

    When I play with Romans I usually go this (post Marius):

    FC C C C C
    C C C C C HHG
    A A A A

    X X
    S

    FC= first cohort
    C= Legionary Cohort
    A= Archers
    X= Auxilery
    H= Legionary Cav
    S= Siege weapon
    G= General

    This usually will work all the time. As the enemy approaches they get hit by my siege weapon (usually a catapault, helps also with sieges). When the enemy gets close enough they are hit by not only arrows but two waves of legion pilas - this helps to thin out enemy ranks before they even touch our front line.

    The First Cohort helps to inspire and thus causes the troops to fight harder and better against an enemy. If any enemy breaks our line the 2nd line is there to attack...routers are chased down and destroyed with my cav or are used right away if the enemy approaches with cav on their flank.

    The ultimate last line of defense are my auxilery troops...either barbarian or mecernary spearmen or your regular roman aux.

    I also have a formation for a Greek defence. This time with stone walls.

    ## = Phalanx
    __ = Stone Walls
    @@= Tower
    AA = Archers
    SS = Seige Towers

    ...................................................
    ______SS_________________SS_____
    @____##_____@_AA_@____##____@
    ##..............##..........##.............##
    ...................########.................
    ....................................................
    ........................AA........................

    I just use that formation and wait. If my units on the walls can take them they are finished if not my Phalanx downstairs will take care of them.

    When I fight with my Greeks, I put my archers on the walls and I try to destroy the Siege Towers and rout the soldiers manning the ladders. I just ignore the ram. If I can't destroy them, I retreat them behind my phalanx

    and wait for the enemy to come to my phalanx line. Cus typically, enemy AI in siege relies on putting at least like 70% of their army to the main road and split the remaining 30% to "flank" the city and try to take the plaza. So, I use my trusty greek cavalry to stop the upcoming "flankers."

    For my Parthian army, I use a strange formation against non-phalanx enemies:

    C - Cataphracts
    P - Persian Horse
    I - Eastern Infantry
    G - General
    x - dead supposed idiots

    The Aftermarch:
    .....I...xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx...I.....
    ......I............................I......
    .........P...P...P...P...P...P.........
    .........CCCCC...G..CCCC...........

    What I do with this is that I march them all toward the enemy. Once my Infantry has good lining to flank, I send in my horse cavs to go in front of the enemy and harrass them with archers. Once my archers are chased and suddenly goes near my cataphracts, I charge in my cataphracts to the enemy lines.

    Should look like this after:

    ...........PPPPPP.............
    ....I.......................I
    ...I.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.I
    ......CCCCC.G..CCCC......
    My infantry flanks in the enemy, my horse archers charges through to get behind the engaged enemy, and deplete my remaining arrows, and I pray I win.

    This formation is a phalanx bridge formation, phalanxes back to back for good protection from the back and front.

    Green = enemy
    Red = Phalanx
    Blue = Archers
    Yellow = Onagers (lots of casualties when the enemy is bunched up in the bridge)
    Dark Blue = General

    it works as follws

    slingers shower the enemy with slings untill they come close enough
    elphants then charge through the enemies ranks and disrupt their formations

    the war elephants and a.e.'s in the middle shower them with arrows

    when the morale is low or the elephants have crossed the front line and are in second my fast moving iberians charge through the disrupted formations
    to slaughter the wavering enemies

    general and his guards with rest cavalry are with slingers as reserves to cut away standin units

    but in this timing is everything
    and against phalanx you'll loose elephants which are costlier to retrain
    but for rest this is a win-win technique to conquer with min casualties

    If you are fighting the dreadful Greek defence. What you have to do is get a heavily armed infantry unit to attack the pike men. You wont lose a lot of casualties (you will loose some) but if you get a cavalry and get behind the enemy while the pike men are busy with your infantry a powerful charge can soon break their defence.

    This is my formation lol

    i send the roman cav from the sides to crash in just after the infantry start to fire there ammo (normally i only use roman generals legion cavalry/proetorian cavalry and urban cohort im currently on 344k but costs are about 300k so lol also i have made a mod wich allows the playing of rebels and all other factions and also the ability to make your own campaign starts and finishes latest is 500ad earliest is about 500bc so in my latest mod you are 1 turn before the am thing kicks in btw i put an addon of it here if anybody cares there is a read-me inside the .zip aswell as the .txt u need to put in ur campaign folder anywayz i have never lost a battle that i have commanded also the general normally comes from behind so that the :wub:s are surrounded and there is no chance of escape.

    Bridge Battles(with Greeks and Romans):

    ........C..C..C..C...........
    ..............S.................
    ...........S.....S........AA..
    .............|..|...............
    .............|..|...............
    .............|..|...............
    .............|..|...............

    ..........X...X...X...X.......

    C = Cretan Archers or Archer Auxilia
    S = Armoured Hoplites or Triarii
    A = Archers or Roman Archers or Ballista
    X = Enemies

    I always have this position all over my campaign map and it works for me somehow...

    What I do is march them to that position before enemy crosses the bridge and I just sit back, relax, and enjoy floating dead enemies . I especially
    like this formation when fighting 3 stacks of Egyptians, oh the humiliation.

    Yea I just played 1 stack of Brutii against 3 stacks of Egypt. How Humiliating. The Triarii didn't do much though. It was mostly my Mercenary Hoplites who did the work. (Then they all broke and my legionaries finished them off).

    NO NO NO uve got it all wrong example

    a-a-a-a
    p-p-p-p-p

    e e e ---------- x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x --------------- e e e

    g g g g

    p=princespes
    a=any form of ranged units
    g=general cavalry
    e= enquites
    x=enemy

    this needs carful tyming as you need to send in the generals n enquites 2 secs b4 they reach ur hastai/urban cohort/legion cohort/principes also i made a script wich means i start in 10bc and end in 200 ad so i have marius thing 1 turn after i start XD

    Another one: (German Bridge Battles)

    Yes, I love bridge battles, here's my german one...

    .......A...A...A...A.......... A = Archer Warband
    ...........I...I...I............. I = Any Infantry Warband
    .........I....BBB.....I........ B = Berserkers
    ..............| |............. X = Enemy
    ..............| |.............
    ..............| |.............
    ..............| |.............
    ..............| |.............
    ...............XX..............
    ...............XX..............

    This formation works best at defending bridges. First, while enemy tries to form a column to cross the bridge, I use my archers to rain them with arrows.
    When they begin the actual crossing, Warcry berserkers, and they attack. I also send one unit as the "back-up" for the berserkers. If the berserkers somehow fail, I send my Warcry to my remaining infantry and hope for the best.
