I need to unpack campaign_descriptions.txt.strings.bin file to convert it to simple *.txt. How to do it?
U need Strings bin converter that will extract these .bin files into .txt.
For converter to work u need to install Python 2.6 x86 version first.
Another alternative is instead of converting it u can directly make changes into .bin files using a .bin editor.
Good Luck bro !![]()
And here are the txt files for the ones you can't convert: Shared, Tooltips and Strat.txt
Thanx again
I must unpack another files: *.sd from /ui folder. How to do it? (i'm going to add Lithuania faction based on Lithuania from Teutonics)
your eventually going to probably need almost everything just unpack your whole game and follow the Plethora of tutorials on all aspects of modding
save yourself and these fine gentlemen some effort!
but good luck!(my personal expirience began with modding a few little things which has tremendously increased in scope)
Use already converted ones from another mod (RegProv, PDeR) - I am attaching the ones from RegProv.
Check my tutorial Creating a World - Adding a new Faction as well, I think I included the "vanilla" versions.
i've got standard unpacked files, but i need it from Teutonics.
I think he means 'convert' (i.e. to editable format) rather than 'unpack'.
That is a different?![]()
relax! it is easy look here:

A don't knowA don't know all questions and all answers
I simply am a man, who wants to add faction and stopped on those bloody '.sd files
I have no ide what kind of files is it and how to use it.
Hi everyone,
Using Alpaca's 0.7.2 converter i tried to modify some files, e.g. campaign_descriptions.txt.strings.bin and expanded.txt.strings.bin, but i think there's something wrong with it. All i can see is some wierd stuff like this ---> E M T _ E N G L A N D _ L A R G E _ C A S T L E
I used Python 2.5.4 according to this thread http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=305188 which i found googleing.
So i don't know what i have to do to see the files properly.
(First post, so nice to meet you, and sorry for bad english but you know... i'm italian!)
Hi There and Welcome to the TWC forums mate.
Well the thing is you are doing something wrong and i think you are opening the .bin files with the notepad.
Let me tell u how to do it right.
U install Python first after that u put the 3 files that comes with the alpaca's converter in to the text folder(unpacked game). After that u double click the convert_all.bat file. It will convert all the .bin files in to .txt.
And those .txt files are the ones that you will edit manually. After that save them and launch the game those changes will be automatically given to the .bin files.
Hope this helps.![]()
Thank you for the prompt answer. Looks like i did everything the right way, but now i suspect windows 7 is messing with administrative and security privileges.
I think i do convert all the files, but they are somehow hidden in the main folder (C://Program Files/SEGA/Medieval II Total War). I tried running the convert_all with administrative privileges (that worked when i used the CA Unpacker) but it didn't do anything.
So I'm afraid i have to find another hidden folder where the files are shown converted.
